Erik the viking.
I must admit, if we lost Lloris (I don't personally want to lose him) I would want us to get Kasper Schmeical.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
see I agree with Kasper, I liked him from his Leeds United days and thought he'd be great.
Not without his mistakes still though ...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I think he is really commanding and the year they won the league when he had a great defence infront of him he was amazing.
I think all top keepers have mistakes in them tbh, its just the top keepers have less of them.
He made a mistake is all. As many have said, a keeper messes up and everyone notices.

i would have liked Toby as captain but looks like he's off and not playing again lol. Always like a CB as captain, although it will be Lloris until Kane takes over.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is Toby leaving? Because he's just come back from injury and Poch doesn't want to interupt the CB pairing that hasn't lost a game since December? Alderweireld hasn't said anything that causes doubt and been supportive of the team.
Lloris can be prone to an error but he is still a fantastic keeper and made some good saves against Chelsea - noticeably the shot from Alonso.
People assume Captains armband means shouting and giving orders on the pitch. If someone is a natural leader they will do that anyway - Lloris has a lot of respect from the players and his word is taken seriously. He doesn't need to be loud to motivate them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is Toby leaving ? Not sure that he is but if so it will be because he wants a 5-year deal on mega-money and the club don't want to give him one, not nearing 30
I think Hugo gets a tough time from the fans, as he is a fantastic keeper. The issue is his weakness (each keeper has one) is his frequent mistakes in the big games. Which is less than ideal for us & makes him give off the impression that he is worse than he is.

Erik is the only Keeper of the past 25+ years that even comes close to Hugo level. Lloris’ only weakness for me is his distribution, which has vastly improved seen when he first signed.
People argue he gets beat at his front post too often - yet imo no more or less than any other top continental keeper. He has made the odd mistake, though as others have stated all keepers do and it’s hghtlighted more due to being the last line.
Think about the times Courtois is bigged up, then his qualities are at times toned down only a handful of games later by the very same pundits and media. Same applies to DeGea.
I often feel with GKs that it’s always when reminiscing we remember the big saves or stand out moments, whilst at the same time forgetting the odd mistakes.
Let me put it this way though I often hear Scots talk about Gorman, Evertonians talk about Southall, Irish talk about Bonnar and others talk about Grabahlar yet they would all struggle with championship level in the modern game imo.
Paul Robinson was amazing for us and England until he made that howler from that GNev back pass that bounced over his foot and in to the goal. Some of the saves he made were extraordinary. Remember one in particular against Wales away which was one of the best saves I've ever seen.
Top of my head this season
All 3 Salah goals.
Wembley - rooted to his line as it was scuffed past him
Anfield - rooted to his line and made the far post an easy target
Anfield - went to ground too easily
Chelsea - Alonso near post
Juve 1st leg - Higuain's shot was very close to him
Arsenal away, went to ground for Sanchez at his near post
I try to defend him when I can as I think he’s a very good keeper, don’t think we’d get better when you see sims being bandied about like £70m for Alisson at Roma, but he need to cut these errors out. However it’s worth noting that he’s often bailed us out with some spectacular saves that don’t get the David De Overrated hyperbole, such as his save at Leverkusen last season and his saves vs Bournemouth and Liverpool this season.
As for the tiresome captaincy debate, how many times do I actually need to repeat myself on this matter?
LEADERSHIP ISN’T EXCLUSIVELY RESTRICTED TO THE CAPTAIN.
I’m assuming most if not all of us have worked or work now? Does only the boss in your company show any sort of leadership while the rest just wander about like lemmings destined to fall off a cliff, or do you pick people up on stuff and coax, cajole and encourage people at work?
Does Poch tell Dier, Vertonghen etc to keep their traps shut and turn onto silent lambs who must not lead at all if they don’t have an armband on?
Being the captain doesn’t make you immune to mistakes either:
Kane missed a crucial late pen vs Liverpool.
Alderweireld was shocking vs Chelsea in the 2-2.
Dier was getting criticism for his performances this season.
Vertonghen didn’t find his best form until about 2 and half years ago.
So on that basis - no captains???
Spot on. He is always the first to talk about mentality and always the first to crumble. He's not a bad keeper but he is overrated and gets away with a lot of mistakes because he has a good reputation, which is hard to shake for a keeper
If a GK is perceived as weak then any mistake will be highlighted, whereas if a GK has a good reputation the mistakes often get overlooked, I find

As an extreme case, Gomes.
Loved him (eventually) but he terrified me too.
By the end I was relieved to have boring old Friedel - a solid but unspectacular oldie
Lloris makes me feel like I did with Gomes in big games
Extreme HRH, I liked Gomes too away game to AC always stands out. But he was far more sketchy that Lloris ever was. Albeit he got a rough time for some quarts of the media at the time.
friedel was exactly what we needed after the nonsense gomes served up in his last season
who remembers the blackpool at home draw that ended our CL hopes.
saves a pen and then charges around the box like some kind of disabled bull from the resulting corner, brings down a man and then they score the pen
forgot all about that Chronic. That stain on the under pants of football Adam too...
When Gomes first came to Spurs, that initial spell of mistakes is quite possibly the worst I've ever seen a goalkeeper perform at a professional level, and I include women's football.
Yeah Spurtle he was really really bad at first. The media didn’t make that spell any easier..

Then he had that really solid season in which we got top 4, and then the mistakes started to creep into his game again.
Lloris isn't comparable to Gomes IMO. Lloris makes mistakes on occasion but they're not as bad as Gomes's, which were proper howlers when they came.
oh no one can deny that lloris is a whole class above gomes
probably a few classes Chronic.
Its an easy argument to say that Hugo is better than previous keepers, look at some of the defences and midfields those poor sods have had to sit behind.
My argument all along has been that Hugo plays in a very good team and doesn't have a massive amount to do yet he still manages to balls it up on a regular basis and doesn't learn from his mistakes. Too often he gets done at the near post or comes for crosses and doesn't make it.

He had 2 absolute shockers against the chaaaavs as well. That diving Dr**** hit a volley straight st him from 15 yards which seemingly was too hot to handle, then he let some some standard hit-and-hope from Fat Frank go through his hands and legs
