I've heard them accused of various things, but never that they were involved in the death of the nobel peace prize winning scientist.

Time to get investigating.

Just on Arabs theory that the Government knew what happened.

Gordon Brown put one of his spin doctors on the case. A prat called Clarence Mitchell. He pretty much lied in every comment about the McCanns that he made.

At the very least they should have been prosecuted. It would be very interesting what would have come out during a trial. There seems to be a lack of pressure on them. Every avenue should have been explored, and if they were the most viable suspects, they should have faced trial.

I do wonder though, had it happened in this country, would it have turned out different. Did foreign politics play any part in there not being a trial?

The actual police also think they know what happened (to an extent).

------------------

What do they think happened, in a nutshell?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The guy who led the Portuguese police's initial investigation, Gonçalo Amaral (amongst others involved in the investigation) believed that Madeleine died in an accident and the McCanns tried to cover it up.

The Portuguese police worked with this theory, which is well supported by circumstantial evidence, for years. Amaral wrote a book about it and the McCanns tried (and failed) to get it banned. They then sued Amaral and the publishers for libel, covering their legal fees with Madeleine's fund. And eventually lost again.

The British press (in particular the Sun) has tried to vilify Amaral as a disgraced and incompetent officer, neither of which is true.

The Portuguese public have certainly made their minds up about the McCanns. And they have been exposed to all of the evidence and theories presented by the police. Not just the bits the British press has wanted to pedal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why would they cover up an accident? What reason would they have to do that? How much did Amaral make from his book?

Depending how the "accident" happened. And if she was already dead when they got back. Panic would be a logical reaction. Whether you or I would have hidden the body isn't here or there. People are capable of many things in a blind panic.
Not saying this is what happened btw, in case you try to spin it that way.

As for the book, was it debunked as lies, and by whom?

I'm not talking about the book. I haven't read it so can't comment. I can however see it's possible that they came home, found her dead after some sort of accident and covered it up.

Them being involved is the only reason they wouldn't answer the police's questions.
