Semi final is an achievement for a squad that looked like it couldnt get out of the grout.

Over the years, I’ve learned a few things about football, some of which I struggle to get my head around.

Sometimes, football fans sing songs. Not sure why, but they do. And, oddly, they don’t always mean what they say. For instance, Carlisle United fans might sing that they’re “by far the greatest team the world has ever seen”, but if you got them on their own after a game they might not even put Carlisle in the top five.

Too complicated for me to understand, but there it is: football songs aren’t always to be taken literally.

Apparently, there’s a really insightful England chant about having a half-decent team who were aiming for the quarters with anything else a bonus, though with the way the tournament went they could even have done better.

Never caught on though. Can’t imagine why.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So basically, if more Man United players are in the squad next tournament, we have more fans and will win ?

I agree to a degree. We went too far with it. The players were seeing the fan reactions and this whole coming home malarkey went too far. In saying that, on paper looking at our fixtures, I could understand to a degeee
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aye, it started off as being ironic, but peaked to soon for me. When the roving reporters were going around the fans before games all they were saying was “it’s coming home! It’s coming home!” Got a bit tedious in the last week or so but it was good fun for a bit.

Also, we didn’t invent football, we gave different rules to a game which had existed, in some form, for centuries. Fans and football association delegates in other countries think it’s arrogant and they hate it.

Most of the time tongue in cheek. And to most it was, some maybe not, but they are either the media or stupid.

We did well, so far, so close, so be proud.

Bah, miserable g£ts….been living in the UK for over the last 3 years now, apart from another year in 2004. Am from Holland, where all streets AND shops are wrapped up in orange weeks before a EC or WC (provided we qualify of course). Of course most people didn't expect to win the WC, but it is a bloody good reason to have a nice party or 3, Me mum is over right now from Holland, and cannot believe the total lack of England flags etc on the streets over here, nor the fact that the local pub was only half full today for the semi....again, in Holland you'd be fighting to get in any pub during the group games....And not because we think we will win etc, but because its nice to enjoy the journey as along as it goes....

Its coming home etc didn't bother me, never thought it was mind.

The amount of people acting like cretins after we won games, in the streets, damaging public and private property was more of an issue.

"Wemberleee, Wemberleee,
We're the famous [insert clubs name here],
And we're off to Wemberleee... "

...Whilst beating a club 2/3 divisions below you in the 4th round of the Cup.

It's pretty standard fare. As has been pointed out - "tongue in cheek".

Nowt to complain about here. This England team got people excited for the first time in a good few years. Enjoy it while the going is good.

If you can't enjoy the good times, I really don't understand the point of following football.

And England have had some good times at this World Cup.

The coming home stuff went a bit OTT for me.

England beat poor sides and then struggled against a couple of decent sides. Set piece play masked how average the England team are. They dont create much at all in open play.

Thing is though Vida Southgate targeted set plays for a reason - he looked att he last winners of the World Cup and they scored the most goals - from set pieces.

Funnily enough it then got us to a semi-final and 1-0 up after 5 mins so who knows, might be something in it?

England have a good young side now. Just need to kick on (unlike after 1990).

I’d like to see a bit more guile in midfield. They did brilliant, but huff and puffs only going to get you so far, we need someone with a bit more about them in there for me.

Indeed, Southgate targeted set pieces and it worked.

However, the best sides can defend set pieces and thats when you need talent in open play to cause problems, that is what England lacked for me.
