Henderson should of been captain
Trippier was the player of the tournament for England by a comfortable margin. World class performances. Followed probably by Pickford. Not buying the Henderson hype at all, and I was always one of his defenders. The only 2 decent midfields Henderson came up against in Croatia and Colombia, I thought he was mediocre.
Henderson was great, instead of passing it sideways, he now passes it back, what ever happened to his through ball, did he even have one?

Hendo was decent overall but was very poor last night.
Thought Pickford was your best player, maybe cause I didn't think much of him before it so he really surprised me, mad how good he is with his tiny arms
Tripper was great too, very good player, Kane did his job well too although really struggled last night.
Gareth Southgate was the main man though

Henderson on his own (Alli and Lingard were about as useful as Kane) vs Rakitic and Modric was always a losing battle.

No he shouldn't have
That's Southgate's fault. Neither Alli nor Lingard are CMs.
Trippier is the obvious choice while Pickford showed promise. Maguire and even Young deserve some credit too. Don't think the others were consistent enough.
Kane will probably be the worst performing golden boot winner in living memory.
Top 5 in order for me:
Pickford
Tripps
Hendo
Maguire
Stones
Honourable mention to Kane and Walker

True. England still need someone who can both carry and retain the ball in the middle of the park to be able to dictate game.
If Southgate doesn't trust neither Barkley and Wilshere, then that is fine. But he better find someone within the next 2 years because Henderson and Dier are not the solution.
Kane will probably be the worst performing golden boot winner in living memory.

yes he should ,he,s more vocal than kane,
Hard to argue with any of this. Kane was decent too, he scored in the 2 group he played, was outstanding and clever hold up play vs Colombia just a bit disappointing vs Croatia was asif he was told to drop deep n sit on Modric all game. But yh Kane would be in there for me too.
Pickford -> Trippier -> Hendo -> Maguire -> Kane

Kane is brilliant and did very well, but he seemed out of steam after 60 minutes in the last few games.

No he shouldn't have, being vocal isn't the defining characteristic. Also Henderson arrived late to the squad as he was playing in the WC final. You want your captain there from day one.
Henderson played in a role on his own and he is used to having 2 midfielders alongside him not 2 flimsy attaching midfielders like Alli & Lingard who spent most games chasing the ball around the pitch
In the last couple of games I thought Henderson played very well while not having enough support.
He came out well for the players who got some stick early in the tournament.
Henderson did OK, I won't be knocking him. Last night when we needed to dominate the midfield we needed someone better ... but we don't have anyone better.
Limited player in some ways butneeds to play alongside the main midfielder not be that player.
Good article. I've never been a fan of Henderson but I thought he had a great WC and almost ran the midfield on his own with none of Sterling, Lingard or Alli effectively bridging the gap between him and Kane.
It's interesting to consider whose stock has risen throughout the WC and whose has fallen:
Pickford - massive rise in stock. One of our stand out players that really grew into the tournament.
Walker - stock unmoved. Essential pace to compensate for slower CBs alongside but had a couple of mistakes in him.
Stones - stock up. Overall a very good tournament and should be the lynchpin of our defence going forward. Classy.
Maguire - stock up significantly. Leicester fans know how good he is coming out of defence but he's another with a mistake in him. Improved as the tournament went on with very few lapses in concentration.
Trippier - Stock through the roof. A brilliant tournament and one of the best RBs / RWBs in the whole competition.
Young - stock unmoved. Did everything pretty well and didn't let anyone down, but didn't excel.
Henderson - stock up. Had a very good tournament with very little support from his MF partners. A strong presence and character in the centre of the park.
Lingard - stock unmoved. some good games, some poor. Appeared to struggle to understand his role in the team and provided limited link-up play with those behind him.
Alli - Stock down. A poor tournament for Deli. I like the player but he has not recaptured the form of 18 - 24 months ago. Maybe not fully recovered from his injury.
Sterling - stock down. Nowhere near as bad as some are making out and performed better in the QF and SF than earlier games. If ever a player needed a goal... But never hid and always showed for the ball.
Kane - stock unmoved. Great composure in the early games with his deadly penalties and set piece finishes, but well off the pace in the QF and SF. Still young and a good captain on and off the field and will no doubt come back better and sharper in future games.
Southgate - stock up. A good tournament from the boss. Questions definitely over his tactical nous and the late timing of substitutions (didn't appear to try and change things much when they weren't working) but his overall man management and media presence was top drawer and he has galvanised the team and the nation.
How on earth any sane football fan can give Henderson our player of the tournament is mind blowing. Only English fans rate this guy. I can guarantee no foreign fan looked at him constantly hoofing the ball upfield and came away impressed
