Its mental that people would rather be rich and play for a team they have no affinity to instead of being slightly less rich (but still set for life 1000 times over) and play for your boyhood club.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agreed, especially if your boyhood club is Liverpool or Spurs who regularly qualify for the Champions League. It's not like they having to play for Stevenage their whole career.

posted on 26/7/18

I think the boyhood club point is different though; how many players get to play for their 'boyhood club' and then move to another for more money?

Also bear in mind their affinity towards teams change based on whoever they play for in their youth.

It's not a few quid though any more, the difference is huge. Could maybe stay at Spurs on say £100k a week as a top earner (I don't know what you actually pay), or be offered £250k a week at Madrid or something silly, along with the additional exposure and millions in advertising campaigns etc.

Hard to say what you'd do until you're in that position I think.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Even at 100k a week, that works out to 400k a month, and four and a half million pounds a year, over a 10 year period, that would amount to earnings of close to £50 million just for playing football. If footballers cannot live on that, than what do they think the rest of us live on. Pure greed.

Most footballers get paid more in a year than most normal people make in a lifetime of graft. So it is total bollox to say their life as a footballer is short, so they need to make lots of money before they are say 35. They can make more than enough by the time they are 24 to live a very comfortable lifestyle, out of the reach of nearly all of us. So they really they do not need to change clubs for a few quid more.

This
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Load of nonsense. Why are we comparing a footballer at the peak of his game to a normal person? Comparing like for like it would be CEO's being compared with footballers if we were to use this terrible analogy.

Footballers work ridiculously hard, have to be ridiculously disciplined with what they do, are literally the best in their profession, have to endure really high levels of stress/anxiety and work in a financially lucrative industry. Them wanting the best for themselves is not an issue at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Work ridiculous hard. Yeh one 90 minute game of a football a week if you are lucky.

Most year`s other than world cup years, about three months off.

£100 plus grand a week.

A really tough regime to build up stress and anxiety. Do me a favour.

I thought you had already won that, when you said footballers have to endure really high levels of stress/anxiety and work in a financially lucrative industry.

The football business is worth billions, Sandy.

Footballers have to endure high levels of stress/anxiety. You just have to ask the likes of Gazza, etc how they feel. They also frequently get death threats and their names are constantly in the news. Things that lead to stress/anxiety. Mental health professionals also back this up.

If you think otherwise; then I really pity you.

That wasn't the point though to begin with. Nobody feels sorry for them but to judge a player for taking £150k at a new club rather than £80k at their current is outrageous.

Football for fans is all about the emotional investment, but there are many more considerations apart from that for a professional footballer.

Also, what amount is enough?

When a player signs for Liverpool or Spurs from a bottom half or Championship club, he might be leaving behind a salary that would still be enough to see him through the rest of his life.

The fans of the new club don't reject him though. They'll think he has legitimate career expectations he might want to fulfill.

Fast forward to a few years later. Said footballer wants his 'dream move' to Madrid or Barcelona, and is prepared to force the move through at any cost - at which point in time he becomes a mercenary with no loyalty whatsoever to the club that 'made him'.

Bunch of morons.

Not at all. I think what they are both getting at is that they are paid exorbitantly for the job they are doing. Is a Doctors job less stressful? Yet many don’t earn in a year what footballers earn in week, despite being a professional at the top of their field. Disparity with the real world is about right.
