Young men especially are strange creatures, civilisations have acknowledged this throughout time by the way they have treated them differently.
Heightened levels of aggression etc but it's natural, should they be locked away for good for something which isn't fully in their control.

If you stab someone that many times, there is something deeply wrong with you. Is there any way back to normality for someone who can stab a young girl over 100 times?
This man is clearly a nutcase and has no place in society.
Death penalty doesn’t solve anything. He should be a slave to the system and tortured.
RIP to that beautiful young girl, I can’t imagine what the family are going through.

People can do crazy things in a rage. It's not uncommon for that many injuries to be sustained doing a rage assault.
Many assaults like those are committed by people who are otherwise well adjusted 99% of the time.
It can happen to anybody, especially where alcohol or drugs are present.

I think in certain cases where there is no doubt over guilt that is what the rope is for.
Also factor in DNA, camera's everywhere, phone signals, number plate recognition there are so many ways to track and identify you these days.
We are way too lenient on violent offenders in this country.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Capital punishment has zero effect on prevention of murder and other serious crimes.
Been countless studies that have proven that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably has a degree or two of truth.
But then the person carrying out the murder isn't likely to do it again. Are you saying that murderers aren't ever released and recommit the same offence? I'd suggest zero is a bold statement, great sound bite, but probably not the truth of it.
As a society we'd save a fortune on housing and feeding them.
The only really compelling argument for not stringing up, lining against a wall, or throwing a few volts through them, is the history of false imprisonments, even when evidence seemed compelling.

Capital punishment costs the state/taxpayer more than life imprisonment

Do people deserve the chance of redemption though?
Its a subject that has so many view points..
is a murder from the act of a temper, or a moment of madness different to a planned, pre-meditated murder?
I think its fair to say that all humans have 'snapped' seen the red mist at some point in their lives, but of course we don't go to the extreme of murdering people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's why the court systems recognize different levels of "murder".
Murder, manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter etc.
Intent has a lot to do with sentencing.
A workmate lost his son a few years ago, he got into a fight outside a club they punched each other once and he hit his head and never woke up the next morning.Essentially to boys doing what a lot of young boys do, not the same as a premeditated act
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unless your intention was to go out looking for a fight.
Then it is premeditated murder

Yep, the human brain doesn't fully develop until your mid-late 20's
Interesting post Wilko.
Personally I would find it very hard to cope with the guilt if my son grew up and committed a crime like this.
As an example; many, many years ago my wife was mugged at knifepoint by a small gang. They were eventually caught because they were morons and after the case had come to court and they were sentenced, the mother of one of the boys was in the local paper saying it wasn't his fault and that he'd been led by the gang.
My response to that was, how dare you absolve both yourself and him for the crime he committed. Take some responsibility for the child you raised. You have helped shape this person who has little concept of right and wrong.
My some may disagree with my reaction but that's what it was at the time.
With that in mind, the guilt and sense of responsibility I would feel if a child I raised were capable of committing murder, I would find it excruciating to deal with.

An as atheist also, I despise the 'God's plan' excuse.
What happened with MH17?
Did God arrange for 298 people that were in his 'plan' to all board the same flight, or was he just being a bit lazy that day?
Or perhaps it's all just a fairy tale.

It's a grey area topic. But then so is the death penalty and guilty verdicts. I am anti-death penalty for numerous reasons. Feel bad for the families involved in this.
Hopefully the lad gets the help he needs, sees the error in his ways, undergoes the punishment and comes out in 20 years time seeking to better society and make up for the horrible thing that he did.
More likely, he will be dead by 30.

Lubo, I respect your view but disagree on what should be the outcome. The young woman concerned has paid the ultimate price. If he is released in 20 or so years time, he will be mid forties, enough time to have a career of sorts, plus perhaps raise a family. All things that he has denied to his victim. I don't believe in the death penalty, but I am firmly convinced that life should mean life in its truest sense.
