I don't necessarily agree with this. Just because Neville failed in Spain, doesn't mean much about his footballing knowledge.

Management and coaching requires far more than "knowing your stuff". You need to communicate, man manage, represent a certain philosophy and culture, sign players etc etc

Most of what Neville says does make sense, and yes, he "knows his stuff". It might just be that he isn't great at many of the other attributes required to make a great coach.

Neville was on a hiding to nothing at Valencia... The club were in a mess, he didn't speak Spanish and it was his first managerial job.

Why he took the job is a bit baffling, but using it to say he can't manage is a bit naive.

Busby is right. By Cech's logic one could argue that Robbie Savage can analyse football better than some formations geek like Jonathan Wilson.

Neville's decision to take that job was a really really bad one.

I wish Chris Sutton would take up a managerial post.....
What a plonker

Is there a source for these quotes?

Neville clearly knows what he's talking about but putting theory into practice can be very difficult, as he's seen with Valencia and England.

I think one of the things which set the top coaches apart is in-game tactical decisions, you can have as many pre-game ideas and "philosophies" as you like, if you can't change the flow of a game with your tactical nous in the dugout, it aint happening IMO. It's one of things which made Jose so great to begin with.

Who says he's a bad manager, even good managers have had failed jobs.

Though if he was to take the plunge and fail again there would be no place to hide. Which is why he won't.

It went as expected.

Gary Neville should not have taken the job. Valencia were a mess and it took a few coaches before it was all sorted out. It doesn't help that he has never played in Spain, didn't speak the language and the whole set up was made to fail.

Petr Cech's point has little merit. Managing, being the head coach, coaching, they're all different.

I don't get what people are disagreeing with. Neville does know his stuff and his time at Valencia was a disaster.

Well Cech is insinuating that if he looks like "he knows his stuff" but that doesn't translate into good management, he doesn't actually "know his stuff".

This sounds very unlike Cech

I'm surprised if true. At the least id expect it not to be worded as is

I think people need to read the entire of his comments. The point he’s making is that even if you’re assumed to (or do) know a lot about football, it doesn’t mean that translates into being good at coaching.

Club management/coaching is an entirely different role to match analysis and commentary.

Working in the broadcast/print/streamed media does not involve the whim and witlessness of club directors for a start.

Neville knows football betterthan most - certainly more than most on here - but his management career (so far) was most certainly shackled by poor direction.

Bit like United have been for about a decade.

Exactly. Some people go out of their way to be offended.
