“As a side topic, Paul Pogba has been seen in Saudi. Do you think mixing with these criminals creates a bad image for him? And what would he be doing in Saudi anyway? Surely he's not spending the off season there.”

RR; I too would not have liked Abramovich to have bought us, I have given my opinion of him before. I don't want any billionaire to buy us given a choice, I would prefer a PLC (which again is far from perfect). The Glazers are not terrible people or owners as far as I am aware. I know there is a strong Glazer out faction, but I'm not in it.

The worst thing we can say about the Glazers is that they are capitalists and their relationship with the club is basically parasitical. But for me that's not a thing about their personal morality. They are operating within the rules of our political economy - if we're okay with being a PLC, we can't really object to someone buying the club with leveraged debt, etc.

Again, I'd encourage people to view this with some ethical consistency. If the Glazers' ownership is objectionable, then there are far more damaging examples of capitalism. A lot of fans care when it constrains the spending power of their FC but don't have a view of the same rules creating grotesque injustices and inequalities that actually impact on ordinary people's lives.

I wouldn't worry about they being Muslims

Because they are Muslims in name only

Admin1 is probably sweating on what I am saying

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is probably the first and only time I agree with you, they're only using religion to boost their image so their fans just lap it up. The bloke wears gold jewellery as well which is also forbidden in Islam.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tut tut. Who are you to judge who is a Muslim or not and why they are muslim? What a hater.

Martial FC clearly has something against Pogba. Denying the fact that he's a Muslim. What a pillock

Not surprised. Shias are the real terrorists. Spreading terror across the world since the era of the third caliph Uthman.

In answer to both Scruttocks and 52:

This issue of where to draw the line raises interesting ethical questions. My approach would maybe go as follows. For a start, if the new owner were Saudi, my first question would be whether this individual is a direct representative of the Saudi government, or simply a private individual. If the latter, it would be interesting to know about that individual's history, allegiances, etc. It must be hard to be rich and powerful in that country without being compromised in some way. On the other hand, I think it's mistaken to see Saudi Arabia or any other country as monolithic. There are relative modernisers and relative hardliners; there are irredeemably corrupt people with hands dripping in blood and there are those who quietly push in a better direction to the extent that political realities make possible.

I'd have been particularly uncomfortable if Abramovich had taken over my club, because Russia is dear to my heart and I lived in that country and made close friends during the decade when he made his fortune. His story lacks blood-curdling details but in terms of the human impact of his dollars, it's hard to argue that we're talking about a qualitatively lesser evil. Consider the catastrophic drop in living standards in 1990s Russia. Life expectancy plummeted by about a decade - a dry statistic which actually represents millions of stories of individual human misery as the state basically disappeared thanks to lawless privatisation of the natural resources of the largest nation on earth. A few opportunists made billions at the expense of the people. Then many of them aligned themselves with Putin in order to keep their billions safe, which means they can also be charged with complicity with the repression of Russian civil society, a resurgence of chauvinism, sponsorship of far right movements around the world, troll factories, and military adventures that have killed thousands of people in Chechnya, eastern Ukraine and Syria.

Or what about Chinese billionaires? Would we get spooked about being owned by someone from the country that is estimated to execute more people than the rest of the world combined, and is currently carrying out ethnic cleansing on a grand scale in its Muslim-majority regions?

To be clear, I'd be deeply depressed if the Saudi state or its proxy took ownership of our dear club. But I do think there's a bit of a subconscious inconsistency in our reactions to this. I think people are upset on a particularly visceral level more because the horrors of that state are more lurid (public beheadings rather than better hidden abuses) and because we've been cultural programmed to find Islamic things especially threatening.

I confess I was under the assumption it was people representing or at least with very close ties to the Saudi royal family. Can't speak for anyone else but I was against having someone like Abramovic able to simply purchase a football club along and haven't felt the same way about Arsenal since that caant Kroenke got involved.

The Germans have a better idea for club ownership even if it's not fully water tight

Yes, I completely agree.
