Errors leading to goal10

He had more than that last season alone!

Knowing what a replacement GK would cost there is no way Ed hasn’t offered DDG the wage he wants. My worry is that DDG is either waiting to see how we do in the transfer window OR he has decided he wants titles and is therefore on the move.

Either way, I don’t blame him given he deserves to be fighting for titles and European cups.

I’m sure the scouts are looking for the next DDG, schmeichel or VDS.

There has been, over the past few years, a bit of an elephant in the room with De Gea. He is an amazing shot stopper. His reflexes are absolutely incredible and they've saved us a lot of points over the years, for sure.

BUT there are still glaring weaknesses in his game. Distribution isn't the best, doesn't really dominate his box and he is still far, far too slow off his line.

Given the option of selling him this year for £60+m and reinvesting that, or losing him on a free next year, I'd pick the first option every single time.

As for replacing him, if we were to have Romero in goal for a season I honestly wouldn't make that a priority this summer.

Im in two minds because barring last few games hes been one of our best players. I would keep him only if he doesnt ask for an increase on his already ridiculous wages and most importantly if he wants to stay

posted on 5/6/19

If he doesn't want to sign then we should cash in. There's no great benefit to keeping him an extra season only to lose him for free.

I'd love him to stay, obviously, because he's the least of our worries and it provides a bit of stability and genuine quality during a transitional period (I also take Bloodred's points on board that he isn't flawless either).

Romero would be a decent stand in for a season if DDG decided to go. I’d rather that and we concentrate on other areas of the team in need of work.

Of course we can, if we get 60-80m, we should sell. He was rubbish this season, and has wanted to leave before. Got no time for players like that.

He cost us top 4 this season and has the cheek to refuse a contract that makes him the best paid goalkeeper in the world, by far.

Also his main strength is his reflexes and he could well be in decline, we don't need a Cech or Casillas situation on our hands. Get a hungry young goalkeeper in.

While I’d rather he stayed if we can get our act together and sort out other areas of the team then I wouldn’t be overly heartbroken to see Dave move on.

I wouldn’t make Romero number one though. He’s a good keeper who’s done well when called upon but he’s in his 30’s and never been number 1 at a top club.

There’s a reason for that. He isn’t quite good enough.

Can’t blame him for wanting to go after 7 years of great service. Equally id be happy to keep him.

People miss the point with Romero.

Let's say we have 2 options with De Gea. Sell him this summer and get a fair bit of cash which we can reinvest, or lose him on a free the next. The sensible option is the first one.

As it would stand, that would leave something like the following as our first team:

Romero

Young
Smalling
Lindelof
Shaw

Matic
McT
Pogba

Lingard
Rashford
Martial

Would anyone really say that replacing Romero in that first 11 would be a priority? There are about 6 positions I would look at before him.

He isn't a world class keeper or anything and I would look at replacing him at some point, but we could do a lot worse. I would go as far as to say he's the 4th best keeper I've seen at our club in the 25-odd years my memory stretches back to (albeit some way behind the top 3)

And in fact, some of those weaknesses I mentioned for De Gea earlier, Romero trumps him in those areas.

I do see your point.

If we got a big fee for De Gea and invested it on a top outfield player then Romero could be a short term answer.

Agreed, there’s a lot of snobbery about Romero, we’ve been spoilt by de gea. Romero would do just fine.

I’d strengthen elsewhere before even thinking about keeper if ddg goes.we’ll likely need to replace pogba, to get like for like we’ll need to rotate him with a statue one week and a top footballer the next, if we want the same consistency and motivation levels There’s a lot more we need to look at before keeper

I don’t think it’s snobbery.

The reality is the lad is 32 and has had a fairly ordinary club career.

If we brought in a CB of similar status as 1st choice there would be uproar.

Perhaps, maybe it’s just a touch of ignorance. He’s a decent keeper.

Oh he’s decent no doubt about that but the fact is we finished 6th mainly because we’ve a team of mainly decent players.

We need better than decent and replacing a world class player with a decent one is not the answer right now.
