People miss the point with Romero.

Let's say we have 2 options with De Gea. Sell him this summer and get a fair bit of cash which we can reinvest, or lose him on a free the next. The sensible option is the first one.

As it would stand, that would leave something like the following as our first team:

Romero

Young
Smalling
Lindelof
Shaw

Matic
McT
Pogba

Lingard
Rashford
Martial

Would anyone really say that replacing Romero in that first 11 would be a priority? There are about 6 positions I would look at before him.

He isn't a world class keeper or anything and I would look at replacing him at some point, but we could do a lot worse. I would go as far as to say he's the 4th best keeper I've seen at our club in the 25-odd years my memory stretches back to (albeit some way behind the top 3)

And in fact, some of those weaknesses I mentioned for De Gea earlier, Romero trumps him in those areas.

Agreed, there’s a lot of snobbery about Romero, we’ve been spoilt by de gea. Romero would do just fine.

I’d strengthen elsewhere before even thinking about keeper if ddg goes.we’ll likely need to replace pogba, to get like for like we’ll need to rotate him with a statue one week and a top footballer the next, if we want the same consistency and motivation levelsThere’s a lot more we need to look at before keeper
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t think it’s snobbery.

The reality is the lad is 32 and has had a fairly ordinary club career.

If we brought in a CB of similar status as 1st choice there would be uproar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps, maybe it’s just a touch of ignorance. He’s a decent keeper.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh he’s decent no doubt about that but the fact is we finished 6th mainly because we’ve a team of mainly decent players.

We need better than decent and replacing a world class player with a decent one is not the answer right now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We have more pressing positions to fill, that’s the point. Ddg would be a huge loss- by miles the best in our team, but we could strengthen in multiple areas, which would make us a different beast entirely.

Buffoon (41) is a free agent

We will need to replace De Gea if he were to leave. Romero may be a decent stop gap, but that's all he'll be. He has flaws in his games too. And he's never been able to hold down the number one spot in his two previous teams in France and Italy.

Romero is not that good and people will see this if he’s number 1. Then they will retract their comments

This. He is absolutely rubbish with the ball at his feet for starters, and with our defenders love of the back pass, it would be a recipe for disaster. Add to that, that he's pretty small for a keeper and some of the saves he makes look good would be routine for others.

As for DDG, I'm a little on the fence. Whilst I take on board the weaknesses that were mentioned by an earlier poster, my main issue would be that he clearly lost focus as last season wore on. Not sure if this was because he was thinking about a move, but if it was, that problem is only likely to become larger next season if he doesn't sign a new contract. We really shouldn't let players reach this point in their contracts

It's a wierd one. I think back to previous seasons, and cant remember thinking "Christ, De Gea, you should have got to that" more than this last season. However, he, for the most part, is amazing. I dunno... Nah, keep him.

The mantra of the millennial Utd fan. “So and so is not good enough. We need to spend 100m on each position”.

They never realise that's the problem.

The problem is also that the guys who occupy the current positions aren't a "David Beckham", a "Solskjaer" or even a Rio Ferdinand. Those guys always gave their all as a prerequisite. Pogba and Martial? Not so much. We need a leader, someone who tells that dressing room what it should mean to play for United. Roy Keane would tear that dressing room apart, and righhtly so
