And it was decided by 0.3% of the electorate.

................

The 'electorate' had a chance to get rid of the Tories at the last election. The 'electorate' effed that up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Tories lost their majority at the last election, so you can argue the people did their best to get rid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well since we did our best last season, will someone please tell Man City that they didn't win the title?

I support Labour but Corbyn has not helped himself. It's like he doesn't want to be PM and just wants to throw stones from afar.

The politics in this country are a joke.

How on earth we can go from that thick wench to this bumbling moron is beyond me.

This is exactly what I wanted for Scotland. For our future in Europe to be decided by a bunch of pisssed off plumbers in England. And then by some posh old English cants in Surrey. Definitely what's best for Scotland.

Anyone who has ever voted Tory should hang their head in shame as they walk into the sea to die.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Seeing young people my age backing the likes of Boris and Hunt in this election when they’re one of the most inept politicians to step into office honestly makes me ill.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ffs arab, youre such a drama queen... honestly makes you ill

it doesnt matter who gets in, all party's are run on bullshiiit and false promises... they all fack you over in the end because they get in by telling you what you want to hear and going back on their word

So that's 3 of the last 4 PM's who have (at least initially) got the job because of <0.5% of the country.

Don't you just love democracy.

Lib Dems got a new leader the other day as well. Not that it made much of a ripple in the news. No hope for them to make a ripple in politics either then?

posted on 23/7/19

Think its funny that 16 and 17 year olds were allowed to vote in this leadership contest yet the Tories think they aren't mature enough to vote in General Elections.

There’s a huge opportunity for them to take advantage of the ineptness of the two main parties. They already made huge gains in the European elections, and they’re widely tipped to win the seat next week in Wales.

No it isn't because they have mostly suffered similar results in their recent elections.

The EU really isn't all one big happy family. If you paid any attention to politics instead of always whining about your own lot you would know this.

Our democracy elects the governing party, not the leader of said party.

Why can't people comprehend this?

If you want to elect absolute rulers/presidents with supreme authority then campaign for reform.

We are one of the premier democracies in the world. The fact that people question our democracy at every opportunity when something they don't agree with happens is enough to make Arab ill....

Yeah it's appalling but it's not as if the alternative was shining beacon of hope.

I do think we need a change so that any time a PM steps down, an election is held. I don't care whether it's Labour or Tory in government, the middle ground decides elections and the leader of the party and potential PM effects decisions.

If the Tory's want Boris as leader fine, put him up against Corbyn and let the public decide. And I can barely believe those leaders are now Britain's political reality.

I read an article that made a decent argument that the democratisation of elections to the leadership of the Tory and Labour parties is actually bad for democracy. Essentially, it means that fringe views (i.e. members of political parties tend to be more extreme than members of the public) can capture the agenda of the governing parties. By contrast, the MPs (who used to select their leaders) have to represent their constituents, i.e. have to choose someone who can appeal to enough people to get them elected.

Combine this with a disproportionate electoral system that makes it very hard for smaller parties to challenge the big two, and it's a recipe for polarisation and for demagogues to control the agenda.

...combine this with the broader cultural-technological-social disruptions of our era and we're down the creek without a paddle.

It's crazy that we send £350m a week to the EU. There are much better things that we could use that on, like the NHS. I am glad that we now have an honest man in charge and we can finally sort this mess out.

It does but the leader and therefore potential PM plays a huge part in the decision making process.

There are leader debates, opinion polls on which leader has the most credibility and scrutiny over their track record that just doesn't exist for your average candidate.

We still have a party democracy but it's become more and more leader focused through the years. It impact the floating voter.
