To be fair, while I'm not a big fan of Iwobi, he was not among my list of 10 or so players to be shipped out. Considering we lacked depth in the wide areas last season, his transfer seems strange. This seems a purely financial decision. Aubameyang will have to be played there a lot. And Nelson had better stop up big time. Not liking what I'm seeing from him of recent. More impressed with Saka and even the new Brazilian kid.

I think it’s a good deal for Arsenal.
I see a high ceiling for Martinelli, Nelson and Saka as wingers that Iwobi.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We desperately need to get back into CL reckoning. Saka is 17. Martinelli is 18. Nelson is 19. We need players to deliver right now. We don't have the same luxury waiting for emerging talent as we did shortly after moving to the Emirates where top 4 was guaranteed every season.

Been impressed with Nelson in preseason and think he is ready. Martinelli will need a bit of bedding in time but the talent is there.

Unbelievable amount of money for a highly average player. He’s an Everton level player. I hope he does well because it’s always nice to see Arsenal youth products have good careers. Good transfer window overall I have to say.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Non visionary talk. Arsenal may well end up rueing this sale.

You can say that about literally any transfer that had taken place, ever.

The truth is if any Arsenal fan was asked what Iwobi’s value is, nobody would have said anything higher than £20M. Iwobi could well be a hit at Everton but it was never gonna happen with us. Even with our lack of wide options, this sale is a no brainer.

Sheriff

I'm sure I saw an article ages ago, saying that some Chinese club did want Ozil. He refused to go. Apparently he's happy to leech for much less money, here in UK. I believe the numbers flying around at the time were 5-600k and Ozil gave a flat "Nope, not living in China"

Gunners came close, but no cigar.

Kind of sad to see him go, as he’s an arsenal academy player and I’ve always hoped he’d get better with us. But from a footballing perspective, he’s not really progressed that much since his first season. Been some good moments, but plenty of the opposite. I’d have rather he stayed for this year for some said depth, especially as it was so late we sold him.

But unless he had a great season this year, it’d be unlikely we’d ever get close to 40m for him again. So it probably was the right time to sell.

Could go either way. A change of scenery may help him, he’ll maybe follow a similar path to someone like Zaha after he moved from Man U, then become good by 25/26. We’ll see, I wish him well

Yup, price is a "maybe" but I've no doubt this'll bite us hard in the ass at some point this season, when the injuries come knockin. We could well end up having to spend 40-50 in the Jan mugging window, if the forward line is where injuries decide to hit.

Last season was Iwobi’s chance to shine and he didn’t take it, he is enthusiastic and looks talented up until the final ball or shot. His end product is just poor, maybe Everton think they can fix this with the right coaching- Arsenal coaches certainly couldn’t.
If it’s £35m I think Arsenal have done well, at least £10m more than I think we could have hoped for.

Kind of why we paid £72m for Pepe, £17m loan of Ceballos and pay fortunes to Ozil, Mkhi, Auba and Laca.

But, yeah. Nelson and Martinelli being in the squad instead of Iwobi is a disaster we need to cry about.

He would have continued his steady improvement of scoring 3 goals and 1 more assist than the season before, can Pepe, ceballos, Nelson, martinelli combine for 7 assists this season?

Iwobi was our main left-winger. Pepe plays on the right. Ceballos is not a winger. Ozil is not a winger. Mkhitaryan is not a winger. Lacazette is not a winger. Aubameyang can do a job there, but it's hardly the best use of his qualities. I have no problem with Nelson and Martinelli being in the squad. I expected them to be - with or without Iwobi. I see neither as a replacement for Iwobi.

Replace what? He really didn't bring that much, have someone who can do a simple quick pass and it's done, if he didn't come through the academy no one would care

Iwobi was not good enough as a starter though. Most of his best performances last season were as a sub on the right.

Sheriff JB spent the last 4 years slating Iwobi, now he is gutted he is gone?

How on Earth are people still trying to rationalise this?

A 23 year old attacking player who had freed up a non-homegrown slot?

And who had more than 3 years still left on his contract?

And more than 3 years experience in the league?

Everton have just robbed us lads. The £35-40m figure being quoted is fecking peanuts in 2019. His price just went up by at least £20m over the past few hours.

What on earth? I'd have liked him to stay too (certainly ahead of Mkhitaryan), but don't be ridiculous. If we'd have just paid £35M for Iwobi it would've been shocking business.

Not in this market.

In this market, we'd get laughed out of every boardroom if we walked in trying to buy an "Iwobi" for £35m. We've just paid £27m for some relatively unknown french defender, ffs.

posted on 9/8/19

He just isn't very good, surely that's the main factor here?

Wish him well at Everton, hopefully he transforms and becomes a quality player but as of right now he's very very average will next to zero end product

posted on 9/8/19

We could play kolasinac there instead of him

Reading through these comments and brushing aside the bravado ‘his not Arsenal standard’ comments, I feel most Arsenal fans are actually disappointed to see Iwobi go.
Having felt slightly underwhelmed by the signing I must say I am now starting to feel very optimistic.

I didn’t realise he was such a consistent starter for you and had played so many games. This speaks volumes in itself.
Considering the premiership experience he has, his record of assists, good link up play, he’s only 23, his fitness record, is all making me now think that we may have found ourselves a bargain in this crazy transfer market.

Iwobi is an Arsenal product and Arsenal fan so naturally we are all disappointed to see him go because we all wanted him to make it here.

The truth is he just isn’t good enough for a top 4 club which is what we are aspiring to be again. Our wide options are so pathetic that ideally we would have kept him, but £35M for a player of his limited ability is just way too good to turn down.

Errr....I'm not gutted he's gone. I'm gutted at the options we have on our left wing. I've slated Ramsey for far longer than Iwobi, yet, I didn't want Ramsey leaving when we had no player to replace his qualities, but Ceballos and Willock have since made me more optimistic about Ramsey's departure.
