Leicester attempted - and completed - more than one hundred more passes than United and had nearly 50% more time in possession of the ball at Old Trafford.
...................................................
The Rodgers way.
sideways, sideways, sideways, back, sideways, back, sideways...
Possession stats involving Leicester have to have this taken into account.
Only three of our starting players, two of whom were Lindelof and Maguire, completed more than 80% of their passes yesterday.
................
I find that quite incredible considering we didn't play yesterday.
But our passing, especially short passing, has been poor for some time. It's Lingards fault.
I missed the first 15 minutes so missed that part of the game when we were apparently good.
I thought it was quite a poor quality game of football to be honest. We did well in managing the game and seeing it out. I thought Maguire did particularly well.
It seemed to be a case of getting the job done more than anything else.
Mata isn't good enough for that role anymore, the play breaks down with him far too often.
You expect play to break down with the likes of James and Rashford because of their style.
I'd like to see Pogba in the advanced role ideally, failing that, Periera who is awful on the wing but has attributes to make an attacking CM role work.
Just look at City and Arsenal, tried to play passes and lost because of it. We didn't attempt a single pass all game, therefore couldn't give it away, therefore won. Passing loses football matches.

Arsenal are actually a great example of why our fan base needs to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
If we played a hung ho style against Leicester we'd have probably lost. Their chances in the first half came from counter attacks following a turnover in possession.
When we played more conservatively in the second half we still created a couple of chances whilst pretty much limiting Leicester to none.
I ain't gonna worry too much at this early stage.... We were without some key players and were under considerable pressure to get the 3 points... we got them, albeit in an average fashion.

A key part of the problem for me is the distance between the CMs and the supporting line. Often their only passing options are each other and their respective fullbacks.

No problem bud. You and I are both singing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to this stupid formation that we are not equipped to play.
Lack of triangle passing options is why your midfield only pass backwards.
I don't see any intelligent running without the ball from your forwards.

This is part of the problem, combined with the fact, as I mentioned earlier, that the supporting line is playing so high up the pitch and doesn’t come deep for the ball.

I don’t have a problem with us playing more conservatively, but if you’re prioritizing defence over attack, why then not drop one of the forwards in with - or even in front of - the midfield to help with ball retention?
The best way to defend against conceding is to keep the ball away from the opposition.

And in their half.
To keep the ball in their half you need technical players who are good in tight spaces or good attacking fullbacks.
We have been relying on moments in games rather than dominating games for ages now.
Appreciate McTominay was ok however that imo shows how far our standards as fans have fallen. Watching McTominay yes he is good at breaking up play however everything with him feels so rushed with no control whatsoever.
Perreira is simply weak and other than having a good shot on him i have yet to see what he excels at. Matic well, we all know what he contributes...or doesn't.
Fred had a good game I thought when he came on although him and Fred simply doesn't work for me. Fred is another who also seems rushed on the ball. We are simply going to be relying on counter attacking football even at home against midtable and above teams.

May as well talk about Hafis expected goals and points stats

They didn’t come to score. The Leicester fans are fuming at Rogers negative tactics and selection.
It’s interesting that in 5 games Lampard has Chelsea playing better stuff than us and is using the youth players too.
Right now Ole is reluctant to use the likes of Chong, Gomes, Greenwood and co from the start. We’ve seen Ole make tactical mistakes week after week with Pogba playing in a two whereas Lampard made a smart tactical move against Wolves by changing to a back three and that paid off handsomely.
We did beat Chelsea 4-0 but I feel that Lampard has learnt from that and will take this Chelsea side far whereas we just don’t have any X factor about us whatsoever.
This isn’t surprising, our players are bad in possession.

Better than Ole's first 10 games? Ohh, you choose to forget them.
Both managers will be judged after a season.... Not 5 focking games
Ohh, you choose to forget them.

Of course he forgets them, it doesn't suit his narrative whatsoever.
He also forgets that Chelseas 'youth' players that started vs Wolves have all played for at least a season at Championship level. Abraham has played a season in the Prem too. Chong, Gomes, Greenwood haven't had that.

and seemingly forgets their draws V Sheffield and Leicester (let's not even mention the loss to Ole's side).
The sentence should have read. "It’s interesting in this weekend's game, Lampard got Chelsea playing better stuff than us and is using the youth players too"
Which isn't that interesting.
