Great stuff - I'd love to be that good.

Of course, being at the game doesn't immediately entitle you to call yourself an expert on the tactics.

I'm just saying it gives you a far better idea than watching some games and some highlights on the TV.

“Would you want the best cancer doctors in the world helping you out? Or would you be satisfied with this young, unproven guy from Norway?”

You’ve missed the point entirely, Robb. Reread my post.

The point is that the cancer is killing us, and you’re bothered about trying to deal with an unrelated minor ailment.

There is no recovery to health however we deal with the arrhythmia. The cancer will continue to slowly kill us whilst it is ignored.

This is a depressing analogy

Pretty much agree with all of that!

Bring in a quality central midfielder and the right striker, and I think suddenly that looks a lot better.

The big question is who?

I've not seen him play but apparently Timo Werner has a 30m Euro release clause with Leipzig. Worth a punt maybe and would fit in with Ole's ethos of young player.

I do get what you’re saying but you’re underplaying the role of how important a manager is in all of this. We do need better than Ed and I doubt we’ll ever completely get back to the top while he’s there. But I’ll reiterate that having a poor manager can’t be overlooked just because we have Ed in charge.

As fans our main focus should be on the pitch and a lot (though obviously not all) of the issues we’re seeing are avoidable mistakes that I feel a better manager would not be making. And that shows we’re going into the season with two handicaps instead of just one. Which makes it doubly hard to get back to where it is we want to be

Indeed.

It's a huge question and maybe why the club didn't sign anyone for those positions in the summer.

Harry Kane's don't grow on trees!

I certainly can't claim to have any ideas... don't watch enough European football for that.

Apparently Werner is nailed on for Bayern

He signed a new contract with a purposely low buyout clause to help his club out before he goes to Bayern

Same here. Don't watch enough European football so only go on what I read. I'm happy to be educated about a bright young forward who'd compliment us perfectly though!

HB Fash

“Okay so you willl need to elaborate on how Ole, LVG and Moyes had their hands tied.”

Firstly, under the current regime, the manager at Manchester United does not make executive decisions on transfers.

He has his own team that he works with which recommends targets to Ed Woodward. These targets have some prioritisation work done, but once the list is delivered *that is the manager’s job done*.

He is not involved in sanctioning final transfers and has no say on transfer fees or wage negotiations. Have a think about what that means.

Further, he does not have the authority to make final decisions on sales (i.e. he cannot veto or ‘demand’ outgoings), nor can he decide on contract renewals (i.e. he cannot ‘demand’ a renewal or veto a new contract).

Add all that up and the result is that it is Ed Woodward and his team shaping the Manchester United squad based on suggestions from a revolving door of managers with completely different strategic and tactical philosophies.

Having someone who isn’t the manager shaping a football squad isn’t a new - or a bad - idea whatsoever. The problem is that for us that person, our Director of Football, is Ed Woodward, who seems to know less about the game than my pre-pubescent nephews.

Further, with every new appointment he makes, he brings in a manager completely unsuited to carry on the work of the previous manager with an every-increasingly messy group of misfits to manage.

Absolutely. Preferably one that none of the other clubs knew about and we can pick up for £5 million!

And I wouldn't blame him going there. If we're looking though and he ticks the boxes we should at least try IMO.

His name was just one I chose as an example though. Surely our scouts can identify a centre forward somewhere in the world for the here and now?

It may be cheaper and more realistic to build a time machine and go back to November 1992!

Moussa Dembele for me is the best semi-realistic striking option. And obviously I do watch a lot of Spanish football and this guy looks great - Oyarzabal at Sociedad.

Though we probably could do with an older striker who comes ‘ready made’. Callum Wilson’s stays shiiit all over Rashfords - Rashford who has a 10% conversion rate in open play this season whereas Wilson leads the league with a 67% one

We will have to agree to disagree.

As supporters of the club, our absolute priority should be the very fabric, traditions, integrity, standing, and success of the club in the widest possible sense.

We also need a leader on the pitch if we’re not getting any inspiration from the coaching staff.

Last night we needed someone to step up but no one did. Pogba should be that guy but he was invisible when it mattered.

The scouting team is recommending new players to the management team all the time.

We were one of the first clubs to look at Joao Felix, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs De Ligt. The scouts identified and recommended Tielemans and Dendoncker at Anderlecht, Bernardo Silva at Monaco, Andrew Robertson at Hull, and Aubameyang when he was still at Saint-Etienne.

It doesn’t make a difference whom they recommend if their recommendations aren’t listened to. It isn’t their fault if these players aren’t signed.

Fair comment I suppose. The point is though that from the scouting team to the manager these targets needs to be pushed for harder.

Interesting - how do you know all of that?

PAtience is each to preach WInston mate but an awful lot harder to actually keep when reality kicks in.

I saw loads of united fans saying exactly what you're saying in the OP "I don't mind where we finish once Ole plays young players and we play attacking football".

This is a nice sentiment but reality is it's down to results firstly and style of play is second, thing is Ole is doing neither well at the moment.

Personally I don't think he's up to the job and have siad united isn't a job where you learn your trade, I was countered with Zidane, Pep around how these managers got to learn at Madrid and Barca but it's a completley different situation with Ole at this current united side v Pep or Zidane's teams.

If he's given time and say finishes outside Europa positions this year then maybe next season with no Europe, another summer window and less games overall you could see a good improvement in the league, but really he needs to establish a style of play that yeilds decent enough results, he also needs to figure out his best 11 and play them consistently.

Reports at the time.

If I remember rightly we were actually negotiating with Bernardo’s agent and discussing a bid (not sure if one was entered?) for Robertson.

Around 2016/7 we had scouts at every Anderlecht game watching Tielemans and Dendoncker.

We had scouts watching Felix before he’d even made his first team debut after he played against our U19s.
