I bet Utd fans remember the 99 European Cup final. Their jouney to it, especially the Juve games, and the final were insane.
————
They were but that season it had more meaning as it was part of an historic treble so every game towards that feat felt extra special, the FA cup semi final replay at villa park was as exciting as any of the CL games, the only game what seemed like a formality was the Cup final v Newcastle

It’s not even a debate the league is your bread and butter and must come before any trophy. Like you mention the champions league is fantastic but is in the end a cup competition and the best team doesn’t always win, but if you win the league you are the best there can be no dispute.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know they didn't win it but Liverpool made it a very close affair between themselves and City last season, and had they won it narrowly they certainly wouldn't have been the better team, just the luckier team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Huh? If Liverpool won it they would have certainly deserved it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They had more luck than City did with decisions and moments in games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh that old chestnut, City would have had their fair share too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not as much as Liverpool. People say that luck balances itself out over the course of a season but there's no actual evidence for that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This. The only fair way to decide who is best is to disallow any goals that are scored through luck. If we did that then City would have won the league by 22 points and Liverpool would have been relegated.

You honestly think teams didnt make numerous errors against City? Regardless the decisions parts undermines both doesnt it unless you consider getting the wrong end of decisions to the point it costs you a league win good luck.
Maybe if the the CL was only for champions then Liverpool would put more of an effort into trying to win the league instead of settling for top 4 year after year just to get CL football.

Yes. City won most of their games 4 or 5 nil while Liverpool had like 10 keeper errors deciding games in their favour last year.
Winning the league is actually fairly easy for the team that is the best team in the league, whereas the best team in Europe rarely wins the Champions League
Not even a debate. It's the league title. The CL is a cup competition, Spurs reached the final for feck sake.

There are those standard defensive errors that all teams make and then there's things like Pickford handing all 3 points personally to Liverpool, or Lloris doing the same. Then the dives Salah made to win penalties....which seems to be carrying on this season with Mane's effort yesterday. As a neutral I certainly saw more luck going for Liverpool than I did City.
I think they showed what the table would have looked like the season before had the right decisions been made in matches, and it showed that Liverpool should have finished second rather than 4th, and some Pool fans were keen to point that out. Tells you how much luck can potentially change the outcome of a league campaign.
Tbf spurs were in the "final 2" contenders for the league a few years back.
Fk me. Even if we were lucky last year we still had the third highest points total ever. Take all the luck away and we still probably would have had enough points for a league win most seasons. Seems a touch meaningless to jibber on about it with that considered. (Especially if your own team is in complete melt down at the moment)
I don't know if it's a joke Firmino, but it's wrong. Also it's sidetracking the point, it is very rare titles are so close, there is usually a decent gap between first and second. So it's clear.
But in any event, I'm of the opinion the best team wins the league, every time.

I'm just trying to make the point that the best team might not always win the league. If a winning team gets twice as many bad decisions go for them as the team in second who narrowly miss out on the title, then really is it fair to say the winning team was the best team?

The pen against Newcastle was debatable. The rest were stonewall penalties, as it was yesterday. You are ridiculously biased.

Liverpool did lose less games and did get short changed decisions wise though.
Best team won imo and it's fitting the h2h games decided it.

They had more luck than City did with decisions and moments in games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nonsense and pure confirmation bias. In fact theyve literally completed a study with VAR in hindsight and we would have won the league.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't say just decisions I said moments as well. A lot of Albrightons helping them get all 3 points last season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You honestly think teams didnt make numerous errors against City? Regardless the decisions parts undermines both doesnt it unless you consider getting the wrong end of decisions to the point it costs you a league win good luck.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are those standard defensive errors that all teams make and then there's things like Pickford handing all 3 points personally to Liverpool, or Lloris doing the same.

It’s not even a debate the league is your bread and butter and must come before any trophy. Like you mention the champions league is fantastic but is in the end a cup competition and the best team doesn’t always win, but if you win the league you are the best there can be no dispute.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know they didn't win it but Liverpool made it a very close affair between themselves and City last season, and had they won it narrowly they certainly wouldn't have been the better team, just the luckier team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Huh? If Liverpool won it they would have certainly deserved it.

The pen against Newcastle was debatable. The rest were stonewall penalties, as it was yesterday. You are ridiculously biased.

Yes. City won most of their games 4 or 5 nil while Liverpool had like 10 keeper errors deciding games in their favour last year.

Liverpool did lose less games and did get short changed decisions wise though.
Best team won imo and it's fitting the h2h games decided it.
