The price of not scoring

When Pablo's back to match fitness, put him in the No. 10 slot behind Bamford.

We're wasting him by putting him on the wing.

There’s a site called infogol that’ shows expected goals by team and player. Stats are stats but xg at least puts a bit of science to the likelihood of scoring a particular type of chance. We won the expected goals championship last year but it didn’t get us up .. Norwich scored way more than they should have thanks to pukki.

Last year Leeds Brentford and Swansea were the three sides who ‘underperformed’ compared to opportunities. No surprise that Leeds and Brentford are at it again.

I follow Infogol too. It shows that the tactics are working.

anyone who follows leeds knows we should be in first place. we just have to keep the performances up and we will be rewarded.
we play the type of football now that is much more enjoyable to watch than the football we have put out for the last 15 years.
enjoy it. it'll come good in the end.

The issue is not so much about scoring goals, it's about what happens when we get the ball in key areas of the pitch. Our movement is so fluid between defence and midfield, beautiful and breathtaking to watch, but the courage players need to make the right move at the right time is not there. Bamford, for example, when he has the ball in the box, often runs on the outside of the defender, thus giving the keeper time and space to narrow the angle of his shot. Why doesn't he run inside the defender? Harrison often cuts back from the byline and chooses the weaker pass to a player outside the box, when he should be sending into the 6 yard area, as he did for Alioski at Milwall. Klich and Costa do not find the space inside the box for balls to be put through to them. There is uncertainty about what to do next, once we get close the opposition goal. Address this issue and we turn our x-gols into real ones.

We have a lot of the ball and build up pressure which results in winning corners and free kicks, I have a joke with the lads i sit with that we wont score a header from a corner or set piece in the league all season, we have already had 80 corners in the league this season with no result, that's a lot of opportunities created by pressure with no goals scored, I dont know what the expectation should be for goals scored from that amount of corners or where we stand against other clubs but I would expect us to score a few from that amount of corners plus the free kicks we get.

For those who refuse to recognise the price we're paying for not putting our chances away, here's the reality:

What?

If a team does not score they won't win, what difficult to recognise?

Leeds Fulham 1,2 is the dream!

80 corners no goals.
80 corners and I can only remember one header from cooper that he put wide as a half chance.

I believe set piece goals across football account for around 25% of all goals scored.

We tend not to cut back from byline any more we tend to cross too early. Leverage costas pace to improve this.

There are rarely enough people in box. We saw this improve a lot first half v WBA it needs to happen a lot more.

Corners need a rethink why not pass to edge if box and shoot for example. Also, get a striker who is good in the air. He might not have been the tallest but even Roofe could head the ball effectively.

We are very one dimensional, we're like a championship Arsenal, having to walk the ball in. We barely score by players driving past defenders and scoring from just inside the box, we don't score headers or from distance or set pieces. We aint as good as Fulham and WBA. Think we're staring 3rd place in the face atm. Need a decent Jan for once.

I've felt this for a while.

It's like we get into the final 3rd of the pitch and suddenly get trapped inside our own heads. We always seem to be overthinking it, looking for that killer pass for the easy tap-in.

I think our entire attacking line needs to follow this train of thought at the start of games:
Are you within 20 yards of the goal?
Can you clearly see the goal?
If yes to both, shoot.

Even if each shot gets blocked, we need to get into the opposition defense's head. Send a message loud and clear to them that they've got a long hard game ahead of them.

Some great insightful comments on this thread. Understanding we have weaknesses and what we can do about it.

We dont have a single midfielder who looks like scoring goals apart from maybe Pablo at a push. This is an issue. Klich doesnt look scoring as many as he did last season

Somejne made point about Forshaw not scoring and he got shot down but he was correct and it’s even more noticeable now klichs goals have dried up.

We have a joke about what will happen first a goal from a header from a set piece or Forshaw scoring

A joke is supposed to be funny ADRK. That's not funny.

Over the last 5 season's, it has taken an average of goals to get automatic promotion. Our current goal average will see us finish on 63 goals. We need to find another 17 goals from our current form, that's like a completely new striker!

Strange how people say not scoring enough, why don't people look at last season and say 2 wins and a draw would have got us up!..

So, 3 games less lost and 2 goals more wouldn't have made that much difference on what we had but it would have got us up!..

We only need a run of form and we might do something, but, 2 points behind 1st in not,(NOT!)a bad place to be!..

I agree, it's not a bad place to be, but not only will the failure to score cost us points – it's likely to have a demoralising effect, as well as affecting confidence. Having said all that, Radz and Orta bought who they bought in summer and there's nothing we can do about that until Jan (is there?). We've had a few unlucky breaks (most recently at Millwall), but when the balls do finally start running for us, and the goals start to come, we've got to be ruthless and kill teams off, then we'll be unstoppable.

There is only 5 Pts between 5th and 13th and no
doubt most teams will be thinking if they get a run
of form they might well be top by Xmas or New Year,
conversely if we drop Pts in the immediate future we
could well be around 13th in the next few games so
being 2pts off the top at the moment is no big deal...
many other teams are just a few Pts off the top.

NJS, that means every team in the top half have the same chance of doing what everybody here thinks we will!..

The point is, at this moment in time we're 2 points off top, and people are going overboard and letting people think we're not good enough!..
