It depends how much you want to fork out, but there are some really tip-top places to eat in Barcelona.

Reason I asked how long you were staying is that Gerona's only about an hour or 90-minute drive away. The old city is absolutely stunning and more than doable for a day trip. Was the location for many of the King's Landing scenes in Game Of Thrones, so it might make for a nice surprise if she's a big fan.

Great tip - I'll check it out for sure!

If there was a food market (frequented by locals) with non-touristy restaurants about, that'd be perfect.

It's also home to arguably Spain's best restaurant right now - El Celler de C'an Roca - but that would really put you out of pocket, if you could even find a booking now for those dates.

There are loads of good places to eat though, and the local, relatively little-known local wines are really, really good.

Thanks man

Are you there or just visit a bit? Thought you were Madrid?

Parc Guell is pretty cool if you're into Gaudí stuff. And the Sagrada Familia is absolutely phenomenal, one of those rare places that actually lives up to its billing.

If you're into music, there's a music museum in Barcelona that is surprisingly good. It's out in the sticks a bit in the middle of a pretty ropey area where you wouldn't ever expect to see a museum, but it was pretty interesting.

I find Barcelona is a bit of a disconnected city - the best bits are incredible, but there's a lot of pretty scabby bits you have to go through to get from one nice bit to another.

No, I spent a week in Girona a couple of years ago and loved the place. I did live in Madrid for a long time, but actually live in the Canaries now. I'm London-born myself. My folks are from Madrid, but of Catalan and Basque heritage.

I concur about the Sagrada Familia, it's truly magnificent. Guell is lovely, but a bit out of the way of the other city highlights if you don't have that long. Gaudi's architecture in general is fabulous and pretty unique. Casa Mila -also known as La Pedrera is well worth the visit too. Haven't been to Barcelona for a few years, but the trouble I found there with most of his buildings is that they were generally overrun with visitors. It might be better organized nowadays, but I'd imagine there are either long queues or strict visiting times to adhere to.

I found Casa Mila pretty underwhelming for that exact reason.

Tips for things to do there? Outside of the normal tourist things?

Don't keep wallet and phone in pockets that are easy to access

So I hear

Her parents went earlier in the year with friends and one of the guys got frogmarched to an ATM by two blokes to draw out his daily limit. Sad times.

Wow. And I thought London was bad.

My first visit to Casa Mila was about 30 years ago and it was a pretty quiet place. Last time back was perhaps 10-12 years ago and it was like visiting an anthill, but a lot of these places have scheduled visits nowadays where only so many people are allowed in at a given time.

Mind you, that was theoretically the case at the Dali Museum up in Figueras a couple of years back and it was still teeming with visitors.
