It looks like a movie. Cast is quite impressive, but I'm not sure if it's my type of game.

Similar thoughts to me Ole, I'm intrigued by it for some reason, most likely because of how it looks, but I've not seen one gameplay trailer yet that didn't make it look boring.

Lad at works got it and was very disappointed after all the hype, he says it's essentially a walking simulator with really good graphics.

TBH wasnt the biggest fan of MGS V, and this has never really done anything for me. Although having listened to people who have played it I would certainly like to give it ago.........though I wonder how good this will be in say a year or so (when Ill prob get around to finally giving it go), as apparently you change stuff and then stuff in other peoples game changes and you get likes and yeh - its weird. And yes by all accounts it is a walking simulator but the fun is how you walk, how quickly and how well you walk, people in the know seem pretty impressed in general. But it does sound like its gonna be a marmite game.

This game is a Marmite game. You either get it or you don't, at least as far as reviews seem to go. It has many Ten out of Ten scores, but equally many very low scores, there doesn't seem much in between.

It is obviously a great game, but only for those that get it.

I want it and have tried to steer away from any reviews (bar the score) or videos showing gameplay, features, story, characters the whole lot. Every Kojima game I have played has been great and I'm massive MGS fan.

Rarely if ever buy games at release/full price but I'm willing to make an exception for this guy as he's a genius.

There is something about walking down a beautiful landscape with the worry of your cargo and serene music that kicks in from time to time. At times it felt melancholic but eventually satisfying to deliver goods that further your progress, story and equipment.

I fully understand that it's not for everyone since it lacks the combat you're familiar with with an odd but fantastic story and exposition attached to it.

It's also fair to label it an esoteric game and yes, even a new genre. For a 'walking simulator' it does give tension and thrills as you approach dangerzones while not able to just fight your way through with guns. The 'like' element is a refreshing alternative for seeing others as competitors and enemies and can even amaze when you encounter (big) structures where multiple people had a hand in it. An invisible community while not being a conventional multiplayer game.

The gameplay is what most people will struggle with. It doesn't have the usual tropes or familiarity and does encourage to avoid combat. If you look at the trailers it's exactly what the actual game represents, so I'm a bit baffled when people don't understand it or are disappointed after buying it.

Reviews are not meant for this game. It's something you have to experience if you have any interest. I recommend to read about the gameplay mechanics and look up a let's play from the beginning. The first hours doesn't reveal too much of the story so it's safe.

If you buy it in a year, or even in a few months, will it not be as good as you’ll miss out on seeing things progressing in the online world?

To be able to see other peoples structures you must first unlock the area by connecting the region with the chiral network. And even then not all the structures from all people will show. I assume that you'll be able to see the structures from your time of play.

Thank you for your comment about the game Marksmanship, I have been watching some playthrough's to see what the game is about. I think you sum it up very well, and it is a game that is full of Kojima DNA, which is as weird as it is wonderful.

I know a lot of people who are really enjoying the game, but it won't be for everyone, which is why Playstation is such a great platform for gaming, Sony are not afraid to push gaming boundaries, and offer new gaming experiences.

From what I have seen, you actively try to avoid combat, Which in a way means when you are forced into survival mode, it makes the experience far more intense and stressful. Coming out the other side there is a sense of relief, and hope that you won't have to do that again, hope that you know is doomed.

It is actually really clever, and unique.

I forgot to add that timefall (the rain that ages everything it touches) will gradually destroy any structures that are build. It's an incentive to keep building.

It's a new genre that explicitly encourages you to avoid combat. The nature of the living and the purgatory world underlines the importance of not using lethal force.

But there are ranged weapons that can either incapacitate or 'kill' beings. To answer your question, yes it's about delivering cargo to expand your (chiral) network for building purposes, to unlock new items and further the story. This is done by making a lot of deliveries and going back and forth and encountering BT's (the ghost figures), MULE ambush parties and you can trigger cutscenes. Throughout the land random cargo is scattered that can be delivered for extra likes (the currency to advance your progress). Items like ladders, bridges, ropes, signs, etc can be placed by you or other people and can fetch a 'like', the so called asynchronous multiplayer aspect where you never see the people themselves, only their equipment, tools, lost cargo and structures.

For everyone still on the fence:

Yes, apart from discovering the story, it's ALL about delivering cargo. This can be 'tedious' and 'boring'. I compare it to a marvelous game like Journey where all you do is walk towards your goal. Death stranding is more lengthy and expands on the mechanics. The pacing is decent.

- Consider avoiding spoilers and maybe buy it when it's free on PS+ or wait till it's on the PC (summer 2020).

- The mentioned tedious and boring part are imo the reason to give it a pass or buy it. If you still are very curious about the story you can look for 'Death Stranding movie' on YouTube where the game is edited down to only the movie by using only cutscenes.

- If you still want some gameplay, there is also an option to play the game that puts emphasis on the story and limits gameplay. (very easy mode)

One thing that caused a blatent feeling of gratitude is when I need to traverse highground and then find a rope/ladder left by someone. "Thank you…!" is something that really hits home. Same with finding shelter build by others or bikes left by others, bridges, etc.

It IS a 'strand' game. A game that connects.

What does shelter achieve? Do you die without it? When you collect things to build stuff what is the reason for building? Do you keep returning to the same place you’ve built, and use it to store things etc? Or are you constantly on the move never really having a ‘base’?

Timefall drops from time to time. It damages your cargo. Usually you can rest there and gain some stamina/lost blood back while you make a tea or coffee. You can upgrade it to have music played (any user can change the song from a selection menu).

There are also postboxes with a build in 'shared' or private locker. if you picked up lots of lost cargo from the field you can entrust it to someone else. Offloading this cargo there will get you less likes for not delivering it to its destination, but still a few likes.

The bigger cities/bases are your bases. The little outposts where you need to go have limited capabilities. For instance there is no private room where you can sleep, shower and drink monster energy (gives a stamina boost up to 25%) (lol) Yes, product placement is a thing.

So you're constantly on the move, with the West of America as your final destination. Along the way you connect bases and outposts to expand the chiral network, that is the main goal of the story. 'Chiral network' can be seen as the internet.

Still feeling the same about the game, those that have it? Nobody bored yet? Gonna get it at Christmas I think when I'll have a few weeks off to play it.

The game gets 'better' in Episode 3. It's by no means a game for casual gamers who prefer 'fun' when they use games as a form of escapism. The mundane gameplay is deliberately implemented. I currently have 340k+ likes and take great satisfaction of building highways and helping others while the story is getting more interesting as world progression followed. If it's not your cup of tea it's perfectly fine not to play it though.

Delivering packages is the core gameplay. This will not change.

It was a mistake to make a tactical espionage game in an open world setting. A linear experience would have improved the pacing a lot more and confining the action in hubs would make gameplay more engaging. Though the combat/gameplay was superb. Haven't seen another action game where you had so many creative choices to engage the enemy.
