Oh yeah, I agree with you completely.

He is performing as well in his first season as Ronaldo did. Now, I'm not saying James is going to be the next Ronaldo, but it shows that nobody knows how far the kid can go.

It's nothing to do with where he came from, because he played in the Championship doesn't make that his level. Where did Robertson come from at Liverpool?
I'm not saying he's in the top three, but how many are better than him in the PL

Where did i say the championship was his level? But making a jump from the championship to the Prem is a big deal, you’re playing against better players and better managers who can work out how to nullify you pre match and during match. So it’s worth mentioning in regards to him doing well.

Robertson came from the prem when we bought him.

Who’s better than him?

Sterling
Sane
Mane
B silva
Salah
Mahrez
Aubameyang is better than him from the left
Willian
Pulisic
Son
Moura
Ryan Fraser
Harry Wilson’s on par with how he’s doing this season

I mean shall i go on?

posted on 13/11/19

Yes go on. And I don't think they're all better than him, or true wingers.

posted on 13/11/19

Plus Rashford, Martial, Deulofeu, Richarlison, Felipe Anderson and Zaha.

There’s absolutely loads of better wide players in the prem. Every time I watch other teams I’m reminded of this depressing fact.

Darren added some more to the list for me.

Don’t have to be true wingers, just better than him from the left or right.

Who do you rank him better than out of those out of curiosity?

posted on 13/11/19

Neither Silva or Son are wingers for example

posted on 13/11/19

Yes there are better players, but we were talking about wingers. A bit of goalposts moving there.

posted on 13/11/19

But many of those players are playing out wide, so it’s relevant. It’s moving the goal posts to talking about wingers in strict terms. Especially as there’s such a diverse type of wide player in the prem.

posted on 13/11/19

Silva and Son play out wide so often, particularly son. He only plays through the middle when Kane’s out injured. Hardly moving the goalposts. They are better wingers than he is, even if they don’t always play out there.

Who do you rank him better than though? You said you rank him better than some of those, so who?

posted on 13/11/19

It's you who mentioned wingers and how we hadn't had one for a while.
Now Martial and Rashford are wingers and better than James.
I'm talking like for like which isn't moving the posts.

Anyway, did you enjoy the article, any you fancy for us?

This is just semantics. It’s pointless talking like for like because no two players in the league really are. Salah and Mane are clearly wingers but are nothing like Dan James as players. Broadening the parameters to include players that play in wide areas of the pitch gives us a far better idea of where Dan James stands up against his peers. And it doesn’t make for good reading.

That’s not to suggest he cannot improve his standing among his peers, but the discussion is about his current level. And it’s why Tiddles is correct in saying United fans overrate Dan James. Not just in terms of his ability, but in terms if the level he’s at compred to others in the league.

Maybe the lads at Leeds. But as I mentioned in my first post, I think we need to be looking at older, more established players, so I wouldn’t sign any of them.

Yup.

James seems to have a good attitude and I hope he can improve but he’s miles off the quality of quite a lot of wingers/wide players in the PL.

Problem is, we’ve been far too reliant on him when he should have been eased in and allowed to develop with more experienced players around him. It’s been quite naive and a mistake to throw him in the deep end the way we have.

Disagree about Fraser, Wilson and Willian (Willian of a few years ago may have been, but not the current one). Deulofeu, Richarlison, and Felipe Anderson all blow hot and cold with Richarlison the same age and being in the PL longer. James is on form, based on that he's better or equal to these guys.

I did originally think like Darren in that James was a pace merchant. We are seeing his game improving. Salah wasn't the same player he was at 21/22, the same goes for Mane and Zaha. Players do develop. He may just go on to be a solid PL winger or he may be more than that.

James's stats in the PL are better than what he had in the Championship. Our issues currently is that we don't have many good experienced players to help the youngsters develop. They are either past their best or where not top level to begin with.

I don’t think he’s better than those personally China but fair enough if you do.

I said he could well go on to be more than just a solid player (which is absolutely no knock, being a solid prem player is a big compliment imo) but right now i don’t see it.

Like i said very few actually do go on to be top level, for every Salah or Mane there’s a Scott Sinclair or Aaron Lennon.

"United fans overrate Dan James. Not just in terms of his ability, but in terms if the level he’s at"

Can someone please explain what this person means by level?

What he's saying is that many of us thought dan James is taller than he actually is.

I thought as much

I'm a bit surprised to see James described as merely a speed merchant. Yes, he is very quick, but I have also been impressed with other areas of his game. He can certainly cross and would have a few more assists if we had forwards that took a chance on balls across the box/Rashford could finish his dinner.

I think that he has also demonstrated an understanding of finding/spotting space on the pitch, whether that is looking for his team mates in space, or running into the space himself. I can think of a few times where he has made a run and would have been through on goal had a team mate played him in (Rashford again).

Just how good he will become remains to be seen, but it is unfair to be comparing him at his age, having just stepped up to the PL, with players such as Mane, Salah, Son etc. Especially considering the fact we have got very little creativity in the middle of the park at the moment. I think that the true test for him will come next season when we have hopefully strengthened further and he has had time to settle and the coaches to work on him.

Agreed. Which why I was hoping sonebosy could clarify what hey meant by levels.
