Carrick & McKenna Fixing Fred

I think he's been slightly better, with signs of a half decent midfielder there, but I wouldn't go as far as saying he's been better than average or anywhere near a level we need, he's just been better than the complete garbage Sunday league level he's been giving us so far.

Won't question his effort though or attitude, so here's hoping he continues the work and we see the benefits.

How has he been last few games? I haven't seen him since the chelsea game where he was awful when mctomminay was excellent.

He's been improving Nick, bit more composed and more confident. Still not really sure what he's meant to be doing though.

McT still our stand out midfielder though, he's been improving also at a higher rate.

It's one game, but against Brighton he was much better than half decent. Needs to do it every week now.

I've always said he has a good skill set. Maybe he can put it all together.

His biggest issue by far is with the consistency of his passing.

When he kicks a football, it can seemingly go in any given direction, as if his boots were hollowed out bricks.

What nonsense.. if his boots were made of hollow bricks then the ball would become damaged and unusable due to the coarseness of the outer boot layer

Could be confidence. Tbh he needs to play two and three touch football and take it from there.

Brighton was probably the best I've seen him play for us. The few games before he has looked, well, competent at least.

If he can become a decent squad player it would be good I suppose

There is a player in there, no doubt... Before he signed, he had a great season, by all accounts (and played well twice against City, i think?)... The PSG game for us, the brighton game... All show what he is capable of when in form.

But as mentioned, consistency is the thing that is lacking... If he could play like the PSG game each week, we'd be very happy.

Brighton was by far the best game he's had in possession of the ball.

One of the things I do like about him is he plays with urgency which he pretty much always has done since he arrived but rarely has he been able to combine it with the level of accuracy and confidence he displayed on Sunday.

His passing was crisp and incisive which really helped our build up and the forwards profited from it.

Maybe there's hope for him yet.

There will. D more to come, he was lauded in that shaktar side, has played for Brazil, he's a good enough player, but not the first to bomb here in recent times. Which to me says more about the club than the player. I think given time he will come good.

He’s South American, was never gonna make it.

The second link in the OP is well worth a read if nobody bothered.

I don't think he will ever be good enough, he'll probably find his level at a lower mid table club. I could see him somewhere like Villa, Southampton or West Ham.

Whilst he's all hustle and bustle, he doesn't have the composure for the PL. He'd be better off going somewhere like Italy where his energy offers something different.

He was never an attacking player. He is a defensive minded B2B. What has been improving between him and McTominay is that they're learning when to sit and when to push forward and when one does it the other drops stays deep. Fred was also more of the DM amongst the two. So we may see him becoming the more Defensive of the two with McTominay being more offensive (but not an attacking B2B) player.

Hopefully McTominay is fit soon and Pogba takes the AM position instead of our other options there.

I wasn't going to bother VC, but yes, that was worth the read.

It was a good read and Fred has been doing much, much better in recent weeks. He needs to be this level up over the next few months as we've had false dawns with him before.

------------------------------------------

He was an attacking player at Internacional. At Shakhtar he was converted into a more conventional central midfielder following the departure of Fernandinho but he usually had more attacking responsibility than the holding player beside him and was responsible for starting transitions and driving the team forward with his movement on the ball and incisive forward passing.

His stats in his last season there doesn't scream attacking MF or an attacking B2B. He may have started as one in Brazil (Herrera started as one, and other players do start in one position and change to others) but he's not been that. He has, as you rightly put it responsible for starting transitions and driving the team forward with his movement on the ball and incisive forward passing.

Which would suggest his game is geared more towards build up and attack than defence. It's what he's all about.

His role for Shakhtar wasn't too disimilar to that of what Gundogan played at Dortmund under Klopp i.e. the more offensive minded midfielder in a double pivot and not that of a strict DM, responsible for carrying, creating, supplying the forwards quickly and joining in with the attack.

Stats aren't everything because even though Gundogan was one of the best central midfielders in the world at the time under Klopp, especially in 12/13, he didn't produce high numbers in terms of goals and assists.

If Kieran McKenna can’t sort it, perhaps Paul McKenna will.

Sadly, my basic Portuguese doesn’t stretch as far as: “When my countdown is finished, you will be under hypnosis, and your feet will no longer be shaped like sheriff’s badges.”

That's not all though. His positioning seems to take that of a more defensive minded player (to me) in his last year of Shaktar. City looked at him to replace or back up to Fernandinho (They opted for Jorginho who ended up at Chelsea). With Carrick working with him (and if it all works out) he may end up playing a similar role as Carrick did.

I still think we need to upgrade the midfield with McTominay looking like the only one who could keep his place (as well as Pogba looking like he wants to leave). Fred will be an able back up if he keeps this type of performances up.
