Why on earth do you think anything is "going on behind the scenes".
Isn't that the usual way for these squads of mercenaries?
A manager's job is to keep a group of 15 or 20 young kids with little formal education, no knowledge of real life, and a lot too much money, in line. And get them to do what he wants them to do.
Not an easy job.
No wonder managers get paid what they get.
If lucky one or two of the kids rise up out of the pack and become adults.
Those they can make captains!
As for our particular squad ....... I won't even start on that!
