Just piiiisses me off when we only make 180 in the first innings and then manage nearly the same target for just one wicket in the second. And on a fourth innings wicket. It's not like it should be news to these players that they have to play properly.

Seems to happen time and time again. The amount of times we seem to have spoken about big 4th innings chases that we might pull off because some of the bags actually apply themselves a lot better second time round.

Looks tough out there so a collapse is inevitable and the players shouldn't be too hard on themselves for not getting close. They need to be hard on themselves for not doing it in the first innings. We needed at least 300 to be competitive.

Fack me, literally gone as I typed that. Worked so hard to see off Philander and then gets out in silly fashion to the back up bowler.

Yeah, you're right about Burns getting out. Overall a good innings though. Now it's up to Root and Denly (who has been playing well so far).

And with that Denly is out lbw.

Just a matter of time until the collapse starts now.

Burns, Stokes and to a lesser extent Denly are the only bats who have been pretty much beyond reproach this year

And here we are, relying on Bairstow to bat us out of trouble

And there he goes

Successful return to the fold, well in Johnny.

Bravo selectors too, all that time he was given away from Test cricket to rediscover his touch, scoring zero runs... Bravo all round

So predictable.

Anyone know why Archer still bats at 9? He's absolutely dreadful. Can't see any reason he's above Anderson.

203 for 3 ends up being 268 all out, I'm also not sure why Archer bats at 9, only ever remember him having one respectable innings against NZ month ago or so when he scored 30 odd but Broad should be batting ahead of him!

Broad's been shocking with the bat too ever since that ball went through his grille and smashed his nose flat.

I guess that's the point, we have 3 proper #11 bats in the first XI now. People talk about our long batting lineup (though our much-vaunted middle order is waaank at the minute) but once we're 7 down we're as good as all out. No wonder we lose so many wickets in flurries at the bottom of the innings.

Says a huge amount that Jack Leach is comfortably a #9 in this team. I doubt he's ever batter higher than 11 for Somerset, at least not regularly.

South Africa are about to enter a very difficult phase soon.

2 debutants in that match, Philander about to retire and their most dependable batsman & captain is 36 years old.

A few good bowlers in Rabada/Ndidi but nowhere near in the Steyn/Morkel/Philander mould.

Not sure how Stokes got Sportsmen of the Year, he has been part of a team that lost the Ashes, lost the series in New Zealand and now lost a test match in South Africa.

One good display in what is like a mickey mouse form of the game, is that really good enough to give him a gong and Sportsman of the Year. Not in my book.

SA need fresh faces to be honest. They have a lot of talent that has been left out due to underperforming has-beens.

I don’t think it’s a difficult stage, just normal rebuilding

It could have been worse, we might have won and then Root & the selectors would believe everything was going well.

Root needs to be stop being selfish and just stand down as captain.

Averages almost 50 in tests in 2019 and almost 60 in ODIs.

The WC final was absolutely heroic and the Headingley Ashes innings was the greatest of all time as most pundits will agree.

England didn't lose the Ashes.

And SPOTY is an individual award, not a team one. Besides, it's utterly meaningless.

Other than that, yeah, great post

Top 4 in World test championship

1) India
2) Aus
3) Pakistan
4) South Africa

India had the benefit of playing most matches at home

To be fair Judd Trump should have won sports personality of the year, 6 titles in 2019, unbelievable performances especially in the Masters final and World Final, it's criminal he didn't even get nominated!

If SA can keep the talent in SA, then I am confident that they can come out of this mess. Already with some legends roped in to look after their key positions is a step forward.

Now only hope that England manage to change their rules and stop poaching some of their players via kolpak.

England’s bowling is a joke tbh. They have no plan whatsoever. This team are due to tour India in 2021 and there is no spinner in sight. Neither will pacers like Anderson and Broad who bowl at mid 120s be enough to trouble India in India.

If Eng don’t sort their bowling out, I can see both Kohli in 2021 and Smith in next ashes breaking some historical records. Batting is obviously a concern, but this bowling will not trouble any good teams.
