Hector and O'Hare,
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Which one was the tall one Ramdini?

Phillips and Quinn are a good example.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Point taken. I suppose it had to be John O'Hare for he was taller than Kev. I suppose I was just thinking that strike partnerships were prolific. Keegan and the Welsh guy.

Youre talking Tosh now

Bush - save your breath! You aren't allowed to criticise CM on here

According to your 'pen-name', you are, Peeder

Ok, It is everyone's right to talk Tosh occasionally. I was drawn into it purely by nostalgia and I simply didn't engage in any thought about it other than I have a general belief that partnerships were usually prolific at creating goals. Radford and Kennedy for Arsenal, Keegan and the Welsh striker previously mentioned -- and many others that are too tedious to try to remember. Make allowances please for my Tosh.

Ramdini they only mentioned tosh because Keegan’s striking partner was Toshack.

Thank you VC10, You are truly a gentleman. I could remember Toshack's name. Everything else was pure naivety on my part. and being too lazy to google it.

Some on here are still living in 2014. Martin has been on the decline for several years now. Ask Reading or Hull fans how they rate him.

The "old" Chris Martin was finished when he got injured at Bournemouth in 2015 along with our season unfortunately.

I think we have to face it. He has declined somewhat but he still has good skills. His beautifully weighted short passes in the area have won us a good few goals. And he is such a well balanced individual. He will make a good manager I think.

Just because our attackers have been unable to score from the guilt edged chances that Martin has set them on a plate this season isn’t Martin’s fault.
When they miss he doesn’t get an assist.
It’s must be really frustrating for Chris.

In what way has he declined? He never had any pace to lose. I would say that he is as good, or if you prefer that he is no better, than he was five years ago. His qualities and his weaknesses are the same as they ever were. Get the ball into him and get players around him and he will be effective at this level. If you don't tailor your attacking play to his strengths then he does very little.

We know that Martin is unlikely to repeat his scoring feats of 2013/4 but he has something Marriott and Waghorn don't possess, i.e. technical ability. He can therefore still do a job leading the attack and holding the ball up when necessary and providing assists.

Most forwards who play with their back to goal don't manage 10 goals a season but are still picked for the goals they make for others. Martin and Mitrovic are unusual in that they can score regularly.

The chances Waghorn has had this season he should have at least 15 goals which would probably see us in the play off positions. Marriott scored 1 of 5 relatively easy chances against Barnsley. With conversion rates like that Martin can easily claim a place in the first team.

Come on dcfchris, I'm still living in the late 60s early 70s and it's great. Martin would have fitted into that team very well and Brian would have got the best out of him.

The last match I saw Martin play he was making chances all the time and as Spart says, the others ain't good enough to bury them.

Well, I never said he should not be picked. Merely that he had declined in that he is scoring fewer goals. I cannot decide if that is because he doesn't get the service he used to get. Others with better memories and better technical assessment faculties. I simply don't know - others may - and I couldn't argue. But he has a useful role in receiving and protecting the ball and laying off to others to build an attack for them to score.

My team for 'Boro would be :-

Hamer, Bogle, Davies, Clarke, Lowe.
Knight, Rooney, Bird, Shinney (if fit)
Martin, Marriott.

posted on 10/1/20

Don't think Shinnie is quite ready for a start. I would have Huddlestone instead of Bird in that team and Holmes rather than Shinnie. I wonder if Cocu will choose to leave out Lawrence though. He has never done so before. It would be the right call though.

posted on 10/1/20

Cocu won’t leave little Tommy out, he will be straight back and our team spirit will drop. Makes me cross that Cocu leaves Martin out and plays that useless twerp.

I agree that Martin can still do a job and is worthy of consideration along with Marriott etc. but surely nobody can say he is the same player as 5 years ago?

He was the best striker in the league in his prime. No way would he get in a top 6 side now.

Well Chris I reckon if he had a 5 years younger Bryson, Ward, Russell and Hughes with him he would be scoring plenty of goals. But of course when you get over 30 you aren't as good as you were.

Martin hasn't played many games in the last few years what with his illness and stupid managers, but I think he's done well with his few chances this season.

I like him.
