Sporting will use every day they have available to get more money, they aren't going to accept on the 14th when they could still push United up an extra couple of million.

We over paid, It wasn’t done quick enough, another unnecessary signing, we should have got a ..... instead.

Remember this is the same guy that spent almost the whole of the summer window on two deals.
One of those players he refused to buy for Jose a year earlier which ultimately led to his sacking and a huge pay out. 12 months later he buys the same player for a world record fee that Leicester were looking for at the start of the window but Ed ended up paying at the end of the window.
That he is bumbling around with this deal is a fair assumption by the OP
