does that mean we have won the league 18 times

Anyways re the OP, loved Jimmy on saint and greavsie back in the day and he was a fantastic goalscorer.

Probably because a lot of viewers wouldn't have a clue who they were talking about?

Actually it's more likely that it's to do with the Premier League brand.

Gaffer stick to the article, this is about Jimmy Greaves, and not about Liverpool, who were playing 2nd division football, when he was smashing records left, right and centre as a teenager.

If a lot of viewers have never heard of Jimmy Greaves, then I suggest football is not for them.

I never saw Dixie Dean or Steve Bloomer play, but I recognise some of the all time greats through their goals and records they set.

Shearer has 283 top flight goals, football didn’t begin in 1992

Come on you can't expect fans born in the last 30 years to go back and watch a striker who last played in the mid 70s.

Most of his clips will be on grainy black and white.

I've no problem with it as long as it's made clear one is talked about as the PL era. And I think it's fair to separate them because the football back then and now has changed so much.

posted on 14/1/20

English football did not begin in 1992; it was simply rebranded.

wow... the amount of times you lot give pool fans greif over not winning the PL... sorry if that's the case, you can't have this either

Didn't the keepers use to wear gardening gloves well into the 1970s?

anyways re the OP, when my dad used to take me to games in London as a nipper he would always talk about jimmy greaves as being the man.
Said he was the most natural goal scorer he's ever seen.
Always talked about how he got injured in the group stages of the 66 world cup and hurst taking his place.
He always said to me if greaves was playing we wouldn't have needed extra time

Jimmy Greaves, way before my time, but man put Respect on his name. Without a doubt, one of the worlds great strikers. It’s an incredible record.
Don’t worry Sandy, his memory will always be kept alive.

Not changed that much, still play 11 aside, two goals, two penalty spots, ref, two linesmen, pretty well the same rules. I never quite get why people think the game has changed, it really has not changed very little. Some of the games back then were every bit as good as games today.

Stick to the subject mate, we don`t want to hear about Liverpool on this article. Why does everything have to come back to Liverpool. Absolutely not a mention of them in the article.

Well most of the billion year history of the world is in black and white, so you are basically saying anything in black and white don`t count then.

It's clear what i said, you suggested if people didn't know who a guy that retired in the 70s was that football wasn't for them to which i pointed out how far back younger people would have to watch back, nowhere did i say the goals don't count.

Just that you cannot expect younger people to care about someone they have never watched.

And most of the billion year history isn't in black and white. Unless they had camera's a lot earlier than we know of.

I cared a lot about players like Dixie Dean, Alex James, Jimmy Dimmock, Steve Bloomer, Alf Ramsay, etc, but I never saw them play. It is called not dismissing players from different eras.

I suspect they use Shearer as the base since no one is ever likely to get to Greavsie's total. Set the bar low so as to give someone a chance to break a record. Jimmy's total will probably be an all time record, never to be matched but I'm not unhappy with Shearer's total being used so long as it is clear it's the 'modern' era rather than all time. Looking back at the pitches, the weight of the ball and the bodily assaults passed off as tackles, Jimmy's achievement was and always will be incredible.

To true mate. I myself doubt Jimmy`s record will ever be beaten. Harry Kane is a phenomenal goalscorer, but he is already aged 26 and has only 136 Prem goals, still 230 behind, and with increasing injuries he will be lucky to get 230/240.

Yes, I do very much, I would put him right up there with the top half a dozen best British strikers I have seen.
