This is actually good news.
Smalling seems to be doing well at Roma.
He's on loan.
Meanwhile we have to endure Maguire and Lindelof
Ole
He’s not in the match day squad for today so I wouldn’t believe the new news.
Tbh we'd be better off keeping Young as back up for the rest of the season, then getting a new top LB to compete with Williams (Williams as back up). See if someone will buy Shaw who's a waste of a squad place.
Young seems to be the only player that can stay fit and actually provide cover. That's his main plus point.
Before the Inter speculation/approach I think most here would have expected young to be involved in the squad for the remainder of the season anyway and hopefully moved on in the summer.
If this latest report is true he must be absolutely sick he turned down the new extended contract offer from utd.
He’s not in the match day squad for today so I wouldn’t believe the new news.

Inter Milan’s deal to sign Ashley Young is still on the table, but there is no final agreement with Manchester United.
Sky in Italy are reporting Inter are close to agreeing a swap deal with Roma that would see left back Leonardo Spinazzola move to the San Siro and Matteo Politano move the other way.
Young would like the opportunity to talk to Inter, but Man Utd are reluctant to let their captain leave given his experience and offered Young a new contract, which was rejected.
Young can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club and join for free in the summer, but privately feels doing that would be disrespectful. It is thought he would prefer a clean break now.

I'd hold nothing against Young if he signed a pre-contract elsewhere. He'll not go down as one of the greats but I don't think anyone can doubt his professionalism and determination to do his best for United.

His professionalism has gone out of the window IF reports are true that he refused to play.
Would be disrespectful of our club to not allow him to speak with other clubs, considering his age and length of contract remaining. I don't believe Young would have refused to play either, he has always come across as a great professional.
Agreeing with the club that he see's out the last 6 months, as cover (which is all he is now), whilst signing a pre contract with Inter would be fair. If we didn't want to do that, then let him speak to other clubs and let him leave in January. Offering an extension is ridiculous tbh.

No problem with Young staying til the end of the season. Still a decent player and good servant. Wouldn’t give him a new deal though.
Mike’s got it spot on. Shaw can’t be relied on. Young seeing out his contract until the summer makes the most sense. Then we can sign a good left back in the summer.

Agreed on the contract. Not sure we need a first choice LB though. Just play Williams for me. Let Shaw be back up if he is happy. If not then sell him and bring in someone as back up.
Doesn’t surprise me, he’s from the academy.
Wonder who the best left back signing option would be? An older one so Williams can take over? Or do we get a peak one and just have two good options that can be rotated if ever needed without a loss of quality?
Is Chilwell a good option? His form has fallen off the table. Here at Valencia Gaya is excellent and at a good age of 24, 25 in May

Kung Fu. I'd be very surprised if he refused to play.
As for the left back position I wouldn't be against seeing Williams and Shaw battling it out for the spot next season if a potential new one was going to cost the earth. I also wouldn't be against playing AWB and playing Williams on the right. AWB, at the moment, isn't the greatest attacking outlet so having him at LB for defensive duties could make sense with the threat out wide coming from Rashford. Williams would bomb on at RB on his more natural right foot.

Looks as good as G Nev did when he came through. Why not play him? Get 20 PL games under his belt this season. 30 or so next season and that is him established. There are more important areas that need strengthening. Give the kid a chance like Liverpool have done with TAA.
Personally I'd like to see Dalot given a shot at LB - he needs to stay fit though. He's more naturally gifted than Williams and a bit better defensively (as you'd hope given he has more senior experience).
If we signed an able utility player that can play both FB positions and has experience, that for me would be the best bet while AWB, Dalot & Williams develop. I mean, Young is basically ideal in that regard if he's happy to accept that role. Sounds like he wants to try something else before he retires though. I don't believe for one second he'd refuse to play.

I think maybe a utility man that can play a couple of spots and who we can keep happy like that. Like a left footed TFM.
Left back is one of the biggest areas of importance. We need a top one. I like Williams, but he’s not that. We need more established players in the squad. We can’t just fill it with youngsters and expect to progress. As this season has shown.

He's not a top LB yet, but has looked good and given us an extra dimension going forwards. Probably best to see how he gets on for the rest of the season, but so far I'd let him and Shaw battle it out next season.
I'd also add that I don't think the youngsters that we have used this season have let us down. It's a lack of quality in the experienced players that has been the biggest issue.
