Cruyff was far better.

It’s a good article and there’s definitely truth in there about self promotion. Equally though you can’t ignore that some of the greatest players in modern times, who played against him, remark about how gifted a footballer he was. You also can’t ignore the World Cup achievements and the fact that he single handedly mullered a very good England side in 1964

Garrincha deserves as much praise however, another absolutely incredible player. What I do find sad though is that it’s suddenly become fashionable to start knocking Pele for some reason

He was a fantastic player, one of the greatest ever, absolutely no doubt

And that’s coming from someone that would definitely know

Great that this article has been published before Pele had the chance to retire from his playing career, more than 42 years ago.

Pele never played in a European league which brings him down a peg. If you're going to start thinking about World Cup XI then for sure he would make most people's teams but the greatest of all time - no way.
Some players out there just shine when they play international football, Klose for example and Pele is another. I just don't think his record for a club like Santos should stand so highly tbh.

And Brasilian football was amazing?

Don’t need to read something, that is written 40 years after the man finished playing.
I’ve watched everything I could on Pele.
No one will ever be able to convince me he was not deserving of those plaudits. His record speaks for itself.
But tell me, who could take the ball off the man without breaking his legs?
Nobody.
You know. Where we live in a time where past greats like Jimmy Greaves are hardly mentioned, you know, if Pele was a little over hyped, then so what.
Over rated? Never.

Given the 1962 and1970 Brazil teams all played in Brazil and the intercontinental cup was mostly won by South American teams throughout the 60s and early 70s (including Santos winning it twice); I think there is quite a good argument that European football wasn't better than Brazilian football back then.

Another one not needing to read a hater article, trying to tear down the greatest footballer legacy of all. Especially when it has been written by some idiot millennial who wasn't even born until 8 years after the man stopped playing. This little boy and his YouTube analysis are both ridiculous. Millenials need to face facts and suck it up. The world's two biggest sports, have their GOAT and neither one of those men is likely to be surpassed as such, in their lifetimes. I speak of course, of Pele and Muhammed Ali. Their status required far above and beyond simply being "the best" in their sports to achieve.

Basically it ain't just what they done, it's the way that they done it. And for these two, overwhelming contributory factor is the ERA they done it in. The changes in the world their lives and careers spanned, mean they touched hearts and minds in a way nobody can anymore. Not without another world war to prosperity, to poverty, to mass civil unrest and violence, to revolutionary social change, sequence of events first anyway. People like Jonathan Liew simply can't get their "Cashed up era" heads around the concept that the title of GOAT actually has very little to do with your career stats. If GOAT was a job, a player's stats would be nothing more than his CV/application form which got him to the 1st interview stage.

For that reason Pele is the greatest/best football has seen and most if not all of US, will die before his legacy. Rightly so I say.

Same.

The shot from near the half way line is another one. I mean so what? It went wide.

Didnt Brazil dominate near enough the whole time pele was playing for them? And pele was their oustanding player. So arguably the greatest national side ever, and he was their best player. That tells you all you need to know.

Even in 66 he was kicked from pillar to post in the opening game, to the point where the Bulgarian coach said this:
"I think every team will take care of him in the same manner,”

Pele missed the next game and brazil subsequently didn't qualify past the group stage.

I'm more than happy for people to describe Pele as the "greatest" for what he brought to the game, his attitude, his following and for being the symbol of that brilliant Brazil team from 1958-1970.

In terms of the best I'm not sure that Pele was even the best Brazilian player ever when you consider how many incredible players they've had through the years like Garrincha, Zico all the way through to the likes of Ronaldo who was just unbelievable at his peak. Ronaldinho was out of this world as well in terms of sheer skill and natural ability.

See, you get it. Unlike the Liews of this world who let's face it, regardless how they try to dress it up, just want Pele ousted from the number one spot because they want him replaced with Messi/Ronaldo (according to o fanboy camp loyalty). NEVER gonna happen thank god. Millennial fanboy rule has polluted football enough already.

Never saw him play so I don't think I could ever argue for/against him.

However for that very same reason, he is somebody that I will always exclude when talking about the greatest footballers.

Pele does come across as an ego-maniac with a narcissistic personality.
