But this season was always a write off. Been trying to make this clear for many but they seem to think because the 4th spot is close, we should suddenly buy 4 players who would walk in to the call, become a team and pip man city on the last day for second.

It's not happening.

OP rightly mentioned our ridiculous wage bill. This comes from having Pogba, Mata, Matic, Jones, Rojo, etc on massive contracts while not contributing anything close to their wages. Heck I think we are still paying a bit of Sanchez's wages still. It's ridiculous.

We had to get rid of them and gradually it's coming down. I'm pretty sure it won't be as high next year and if we give Ole another year they'll all be out.

No, last season was a write off regarding Ole

This season our club spent more than anyone else and still had a huge number of players who finished 2nd just a couple of seasons ago.

No one expected a title challenge but it was absolutely expected to be better than our worst start since the 80s

After the summer is seemingly accepted that this season a finish between 4th and 7th was expected. That couldn't take into account missing Rashford, Martial and Pogba for large periods.

As for spending, we brought in 3 players, none of whom are world beaters. Your gripe should be with Ed on that one, Ole wanted a striker after Lukaku left.

Context is important here, look how young our squad is, the injuries we've had and amount of games we've played,

It had taken Gary Neville four years to figure out what the JA 606 United board has been saying about Ed.

Figuring it out and publicly calling for his head, as a Utd legend and SS pundit, is a big difference. Ex players are really getting on his back now.

We can all sit here and speculate, but these guys know a lot more about the goings on at the club than we do.

You answer your own questions to the problems Man United face in the article.

Nothing will change or get much better at Man United, (in fact they could get a lot worse with unexpected injuries to key players like Pogba and Rashford), under ANY manager in the World, with the current owners allowing their hapless Chief Exec to run the show as he does at the present.

I'm amazed many United fans can't work this one out.

For me this season was never about competing for trophies or necessarily getting top 4. Our squad clearly needs improving but imo there’s no point bringing in short term fixes this window unless it’s a 6 month loan. Buying someone who doesn’t fit into our long term plans, will cost a bomb in wages, hard to move on and only really here to take Rashford’s place while he’s injured and needing time to adjust is a stupid idea.

The evidence points to the opposite.

30 games? Rashford’s out for 2 months isn’t he, that’s currently 11 games.

RVP said he had the same injury and was out for 4 months. With Europa and FA cup (assuming we go through) and if it is say, 8/9 weeks that’s around 20 games. I think 3 months is the sensible prognosis with also getting him match fit

As we're on the subject, some decent pieces on the excellent job Woodward does by The Athletic if anyone's a paid member:

If United and fans expect that Greenwood and Martial will be enough to push us to a top 4 finish and maybe a Cup Final or two then they are deluded.

Can Greenwood and Martial see the season out for us without us getting into a relegation scrap so we can then regroup with returning fit players for a proper pre-season and do some good transfer business in the summer. Yes.

Will panic buying old yet experienced journeymen in the next week or so on ridiculous contracts make an immediate impact. No.

Would signing a Henrik Larrson type be that bad?

As Keane said last night, Liverpool took 30 years to get it right. To build a squad like City or Pool is no easy task. They've raised the bar significantly since the SAF days.

Not just us who are struggling to compete, it's the same with Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea. Don't see everyone sticking the knives in to Lampard, Arteta and Jose like they do with Ole.

Sometimes you have periods like this with clubs. As long as we keep spending and give Ole time it could work out well. If not, we move on and find another coach who can deliver.

All we can do is stop being a bunch of whiny biiitches moaning about every decision the club makes. It's Liverpools time at the moment, City look to be fading. When Liverpool fade we need to be in a position to take full advantage and that's what we are trying to do.

Larson was only a loan, who is there that can be brought in? Also a Larrson isn’t really what we need, he brought with him some experience and a level head, he didn’t really bring goals which is what we are lacking.

posted on 20/1/20

A Henrk Larson would be perfect, but they don't come along often. He had the character as well as the skill

posted on 20/1/20

It only took Liverpool 30 years because they made poor decisions. It’s only really taken them a few years to build their current squad, they haven’t gradually improved every year for 30 years.

It’s about making the right decisions, something we are highly unlikely to ever do with the Glazers and Woodward in charge.

That was a time when the club was healthy Robb. There was a winning culture and belief at the club that was infectious.

Players just see Man United as a cash cow these days. Minimum effort for maximum reward. Ole is trying to change that culture. But it will takes time.

And is there a Henrik Larrson type available this week?
