Only experience I've got is Brazil, mostly Rio and Sao Paolo.
If you are passing through there, happy to share a few tips.
In Brazil carry two wallets.
One with about $50/60 worth of local money and the other with your actual money. So if you bet mugged you can hand over a wallet with no resistance as they will shoot you.
Don’t tell anyone you’re English
Pretend to be Irish as everyone loves us.
Only joking sounds like a great trip
What happened to se? He seemed to just disappear?
My brother in law recently travelled through Argentina, Chile and Peru. Absolutely loved it, Argentina and Peru in particular. Think a lot depends which areas you’re going to, there’s quite a few that are no go without a guide.
Thinking of starting in Usuaia, Chile, back to Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and then Mexico if I haven’t spent all my money. We weren’t thinking of Brazil tbh. But I am open to suggestions.
If you do the Inca trail in Peru remember to tip your guide plenty.

there’s some truth in that.
Been to Chile, Peru and Ecuador. Peru and Chile felt pretty safe if you stayed on well trodden paths. Ecuador was dodgy from my experience

Irish or Scottish
Skip Paraguay, there’s absolutely nothing of interest there.
Spend the extra time in Bolivia, which has the most humble, polite and dignified people in the world, a ridiculous amount of fascinating history, all kinds of terrain (do not miss the altiplano or the salt flats at Uyuni), interesting unspoilt colonial cities (Potosi is probably the pick), oodles of culture, Lake Titicaca and the Isla del Sol. I’d also recommend Toro Toro National Park.
Peru is also fascinating. Unless you’re really interested in nature and the ocean, I’d minimise time in Chile (apart from the desert, altiplano and hot springs in the north) and Ecuador and focus on Bolivia, Peru and Colombia.
This might sound a little ridiculous, but Brazil is a long way away from the west coast and the Andes, and unless you have a *lot* of time is probably a different trip or two.
Happy to answer any specific questions, although bear in mind I haven’t been over the far side of the continent for close to 15 years.

Great bit of advice thanks Rosso! I’ve got an indefinite amount of time, having an early midlife crisis so not setting any time limits just stay in places as long as I want really. But the west coast definitely has more of a pull to me for all of the history

Save money and stay in the hills of Rio, you get a great view, stay in buildings made of recycled materials and you get to meet the real Brazilian folk
Best advice I can give is to go over there for at least 6 months.
Will be a nice break,
for everyone on Ja606.

Help not being a target with the ‘fresh off the plane’ tourist look by aggressively rubbing sandpaper all over your body a few days before to achieve that authentic seasoned sunburn look. Compliment the effects by following it up with deep heat rub.
Also, to avoid beggars, simply push a wheelbarrow of fish heads everywhere you go, and hey presto you’ll have your own personal guard of seagulls to keep them away.
