Genuine question, do you think the quality of the league has gone down?

Me? No.

I think there's a reasonable discussion to be had though.

The argument about big teams getting weaker is an interesting one, though on balance I'm of the view that it's much like it has always been.

Liverpool vs Man City, Man Utd vs Arsenal... it's very rare for more than 2 or 3 clubs to be fighting it out.

I'm curious to know the actual reasoning that people think the quality of the league has decreased?

Average points after 25 games from the last 5 seasons:
1st - 60
2nd - 52
3rd - 50

Points after 25 games this season:
1st - 73
2nd - 51
3rd - 49

So has the rest of the league got weaker, or are we merely an outlier?

Totally agree, although I'd add that I think the quality of players is much more spread about due to the TV money the prem receives. 👍

The problem with stats is that I think you can probably find one to suit your argument either way.

Yeh, you might be right.

Do big clubs find it harder to get star players from the lower sides because of wages? I'm not sure tbh.

the quality of the league has improved, not gone down, and thats why there are no given games anymore.

there is so much money being pumped into even the smaller teams nowadays that its more competetive than ever.

whilst Liverpool have run away with the league and will deserve to win it, they havent been as impressive as some of the scousers make out.

they have ground out quite a few results this season which is a sign of being a league winning side, but performance wise at times they have been a tad fortunate at times

Not sure how you can say the quality of the PL has gone down when the EL and CL were both all English finals last season.

Of the four English teams in the CL last season, only 1 was knocked out by a foreign team ffs.

Thing is there was not a peep about the strength of the league the last two seasons, particularly season before last when City won it at a canter with a record breaking 100 points. IMO that’s why us lot think the league is weak argument is disingenuous.

Some people would argue that Barca and Real are not as strong at the moment, which may affect that.

Thing is I don't get the argument like Poyet has outlined that we weren't at out best but still won as a sign that the league is weaker. There have been quite a few games this season where we haven't been on it but have found a way to win due to a moment of magic or even a little bit of luck, the 1-0 win v Sheffield comes to mind with Henderson's howler.

If anything us winning so many games 1-0/2-1 would suggest the league is competitive?

It's a fair point - they absolutely walked it.

But do we really think Poyet is somehow anti Liverpool then?

So basically hes saying as teams are more competitive its harder for the top teams to assert dominance and have their quality shine through? Fair enough.

Not sure about wages, but I'd certainly say transfer fees. I mean Villa asking for £80 million for Grealish is case in point for me. No way an £80 million player, but due to not needing to sell they can ask for crazy money.

No, there’s no conflation between Poyet’s comments and WUM’s on here saying the league is magically weak this season.

Well he did play for Chelsea for there might be some bias. He's talking sheite mind, but whether it's bias orientated only he will know.

He's not wrong is he really? The league looks decidedly weaker this season. Liverpool have carried on their form from last season while the other big teams have gone down in quality and/or are going through transitions.

posted on 17/2/20

spot on and agrees with most peoples sentiments. A lot of teams need big rebuilds and liverpool are far and away the best team in the league.

Pretty much this, it appears people see quality as only scoring goals and flashy plays? Its unfair to use just that as the quality of everything else hs clearly gone up, management defending tactics work rate organisation of teams etc the quality is so high now you see bottom placed teams in the prem beating city and holding runaway leaders at home for long periods and only losing 0-1. Also the quality of player these lower clubs have is much higher than its ever been.

Teams that have spent billions can get beaten by bottom of the table newly promoted teams, its more of an occurrence now and the gaps never been closer the points from 4th to like 17th was 9 points after 20 odd games wasnt it?

I can see his point but the main reason the quality of attacking plays would drop would surely be bacause the quality of defensive players and other stuff from opposition teams are countering it.

An already top Liverpool side making the most of good fortune and a drop in quality in the rest of the league.

My point is that if someone like him says it, can't we debate it rather than assuming he's coming at it to wind you guys up, as is what happens on here?

Okay Liverpool fans, what do you think about this...

A drop in quality amongst the big clubs hasn’t helped Liverpool win the league but has helped the points total be as big as it is?

Not saying I agree, just throwing it out there.
