I don't think he meant the discussion was pointless, although that may have been how it come across, to you. Which is why he said he could have phrased it better.

What he meant was it's impossible to quantify as there are so many variables.

I think your outburst may have came due to a previous argument you had with him, when you also called him a priсk.

I imagine he was exaggerating the animal comment for effect.
