When Liverpool won European Cups they had byes to te final.
In the late 70s and early 80s, Spanish and Italian football was at all time low
German sides were decent
1981, LIverpool played Oulun Palloseura, Aberdeen and CSKA Sofia to reach semis
1985 Lech Posnan, Benfica, Austria Vienna and Panathaniakos to reach final

That Villa side 81/2 was pretty ordinary, finished 11th in league.
