The tiny figure of Billy Gilmour looked like a boy among men at the heart of this FA Cup tie between two Premier League superpowers - but the 18-year-old Scot gave a performance that was huge in stature.

Gilmour, who has only played six games with three starts and a total of 281 minutes, may be short on experience but he looked big on talent as his controlled, creative display deservedly won him the man-of-the-match award.

He glided around midfield, happy to take the ball in deep positions but also willing to make an impact further forward in the face of experienced opposition such as Fabinho.

Lampard told BBC One: "What an incredible performance for a young player. He was a calm head in that first five or 10 minutes. He's a throwback of a midfielder.

"Can you put your foot in? Yes. Can you make angles to play the passes? Yes. He's only slight in stature but he's huge in personality. He deserves people to talk about him after a performance like that."

Good on him!

Very limited adult football experience...

Looked like he had played comfortably at this level for years, playing at a standard which belies his age...immaculate.

Great to see.

Know he’s an exceptional talent, but given the standard at Chelsea is also exceptional compared to our team, have to wonder if guys like Patterson, Kennedy, McPake could really be any worse than some of the guys playing in our team.

What is mental is it being easier to break into the 1st team at Chelsea than Rangers. To be fair the lad saw the writing on the wall and got out while he could. Ridiculous pressure on the OF to win every week.

Good to see that at 5ft6in they haven't forced him to play out wide like some of the dinosaur coaches of the past would advise. Hopefully he can get more game time and become a national team first pick.

I'm pretty sure he was knocking on the door of the first team squad and Rangers did everything they could to keep hold of him, but his mind was made up.

And you're right, the pressure to win in the OF is ridiculous, and the fans can be terrible for getting on a young player's back if anything goes wrong.

If I'm being honest, rather disappointed that he's doing it for them but not us.

On his showing last night he'd be a better option to whoever we have in the middle.

However if he didn't go, would he have developed the same? Disappointed none the less.

Straight into the Scotland squad.

Miles better than the rest of the midfielders already on that showing.

Didnt see the game as watched Edinburgh derby with couple of Hibees.....Hearts p!ssed all over them . I have a lot of respect for Gilmour and he has really buckled down when plenty others in the same boat stagnate... seems level headed too thinks still need a wee bit more bulk but sure that will come

I thought that until i seen him flying into tackles, he got man of the match and he was comfortably the best player on the pitch.

No mean feat against Liverpool, straight into the Scotland squad on the back of that, he has to be.

He’d already made his decision a year before he joined Chelsea.

Didn’t see him last night, but did hear them talking about him after the match and they were glowing in their praise of him.

Glad he left you.

It was the word on the street a lot longer than that, mate.

Heard an interesting story about his meeting with Arsenal when he was being touted around. Not for on here. Let's just say an interesting negotiating technique, if true?

Him and his family were on holiday at the same hotel as us in Zante the year before he joined Chelsea and my son had a few kicks outs with him. I’d never heard of him, but he was quite open about his move.

Fair play to him for doing it. Lot of youngsters head south and you never here about them again.

Not what rangers need right now of course-lacks the physicality they want apparently.

He was at Celtic too as a youngster, missed out on him due to him not being able to get from his home to Celtic's training in time after school.

Always glad to see a Scottish player genuinely comfortable taking the ball under pressure.

Obviously worked in his favour Chelsea had the transfer ban....it allowed him to get closer to the first team and more recognised

I think in these situations you also need to consider he's probably already on top end Rangers wages. Football wise it was a risk, although it's not like Rangers have been amazing at bringing kids into the team but financially this was his opportunity he had to take.

And he was called Billy which is frowned upon.
