As leaders of the free world, I fear the US will have a high percentage of deaths than most developed nations due to the healthcare situation and hand to mouth existence many who have basic insurance/linked to employment that they lose.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Their healthcare and welfare system is going to be a topic of great debate after the fall out of this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When we get through this; and we will; nothing would shock me less were we reasonably quickly to just return to the way of life we had until very recently.
It’ll be seen as just another horrible virus that took thousands of lives. Who even talks about Ebola or SARS in the U.K. these days other than scientists?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You really think you can compare SARS and Ebola to this in terms of the impact it had had on the world?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No. I’m referring to human nature.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But why bring up Ebola and SARS? Completely different scenarios
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because they were two horrible diseases that took many lives. I’d have thought that was obvious

Maybe for the rich, but for the lesser earners that will be devastated by this it’s not so easy just to return to normal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I can’t even begin to think of the economic fall out from this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Then why are you using sars and ebola to rationalise the thought that people will just go back to normal?
They never had the same impact, this is an unprecedented situation in our lifetime.
There is without doubt going to be a massive hangover from this post-corona
Economies will take entire generations to recover imo.

Oh for goodness sake.
It’s all relative. The poor people will be poorer. The richer people will be poorer. If and when things get back up and running then people will revert to their day to day lives and live within or in many cases beyond their means. As is normal.
They’ll want their holidays and all the trimmings and companies such as travel agencies, airlines and the like will adapt to their new mass markets. In time there will be a normality.
An opinion. Mine
If you think the world will change all that much when the worst case scenario for this is 12-18 months and there will be huge costs to government around the world I think you are wrong.
This all indeed could be over with or at least manageable in a much shorter space of time.
Wonder if the Tories stay in power if in return for them opening the purse strings (though nowhere near as good enough) they’ll return with austerity part two in the next decade

It’s hundreds of billions. But it’s worldwide. Global write off? Readjustment of debt?
I think you’re being naive. The UK in particularly is heading towards economic collapse given the government’s reluctance to end the transition period.
People won’t be able to just revert to their day to day lives when the economic and social impact of this virus makes it’s impossible to do so.
But again, you cite ebola and sars and they never had a global economic impact. So it’s flawed reasoning to use it as justification for your belief.

Maybe and yet to be seen. It won’t happen overnight but I believe it will happen. That’s why our government is doing everything it can to keep industry moving and supporting companies and businesses in not letting people go. Whether that works or not is hugely dependent on how we as the population behave and react.
With recent events in pubs refusing to close and people ignoring the social distancing they may be left with no alternative.

They did in the areas they greatly affected.
That’s not a global economic impact.
There’s only so much the government can do to prop up industry. And we’re in the mire of an incompetent Brexit strategy. It’ll take generations for things to go back to normal, if they ever do.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn’t say it was. I cited them as two huge diseases that at the time were seen as potentially being harmful to the entire planet. They weren’t and they’re very seldom mentioned now, at least here. I think the same will happen with this. It was only a few years ago we suffered the worst loss of life in the U.K. at 28,000 in the one year. And no I’m not comparing these. Do we now talk about that?
People will move on. It’s all a matter of time. And they will revert back to normal habits quickly.
If we have a total lockdown and it goes on for say longer than 2-3 months there won’t be industry to return to. Who do you think can survive? Then we’re in a different ball game altogether.
And right now nobody gives a fwck about Brexit. Every independent country is doing their own thing to protect their own citizens. There’s no join up at all.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I must be wrong then eh? Which essentially is all you’re trying to show.
Here’s a hint. This is a forum for discussion and thought sharing. That’s my opinion. And as I said, “nothing would shock me less”. Hardly a prophesy I’d say.
Anyway. You crack on

I can’t even begin to think of the economic fall out from this.

As leaders of the free world, I fear the US will have a high percentage of deaths than most developed nations due to the healthcare situation and hand to mouth existence many who have basic insurance/linked to employment that they lose.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Their healthcare and welfare system is going to be a topic of great debate after the fall out of this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When we get through this; and we will; nothing would shock me less were we reasonably quickly to just return to the way of life we had until very recently.
It’ll be seen as just another horrible virus that took thousands of lives. Who even talks about Ebola or SARS in the U.K. these days other than scientists?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You really think you can compare SARS and Ebola to this in terms of the impact it had had on the world?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No. I’m referring to human nature.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But why bring up Ebola and SARS? Completely different scenarios
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because they were two horrible diseases that took many lives. I’d have thought that was obvious

Which I disagreed with. You don’t need to get defensive - just providing a counter point to your argument. No dramas

People won’t be able to just revert to their day to day lives when the economic and social impact of this virus makes it’s impossible to do so.
posted on 22/3/20
But again, you cite ebola and sars and they never had a global economic impact.

That’s not a global economic impact.
There’s only so much the government can do to prop up industry. And we’re in the mire of an incompetent Brexit strategy. It’ll take generations for things to go back to normal, if they ever do.
