Cinci or VC, what are the latest figures over there?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not looked this morning but was 85k last night. Death rate is low so far at under 1.5% which is something to be thankful for. But that can change quick, I know an OAP home in Jersey has been infected and it is assumed they all have it so we will see a lot from that home die sadly.

Well didn't that old fat gordon guy who use to run the country overspend vast fortunes on pointless crap which significantly impacted our credit lines ran up huge debts and pretty much left us unable to get through a global credit crunch..
----------------------------------------------------------------------

If it was vast overspending, how come the deficit was lower than under some recent Tory governments and how come the Conservatives, at the previous general election, pledged to match Labour spending levels if they won power?

The recession that preceded the 2008 crash came under Tory rule after a decade of Tory rule. Recessions are both complex and cyclical phenomena. You are talking about something while lacking both knowledge of the facts and understanding of the mechanisms. When there's a topic I'm wholly ignorant about I tend to keep quiet or ask questions to people who are better informed, otherwise I risk coming across as an idiot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The borrowing for the UK was at its highest ever under a labour government after the 2008 crash and from 2002-2008 it was at the same or mostly higher in fact than it was from 94-97.

As you yourself said these things are very complicated.

I think the overriding point re: the 2003-2008 boom overspending/over-lending is that none of the governments did anything to protect against this kind of thing happening. Why? Because it made them rich, which is why neither party would have really done anything different in my opinion

Isn’t it harder to do this type of thing in the US as each state is like a country (to an extent) in their own right?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think the separation of powers between federal government and state government does to some extent constrain the POTUS's ability to coordinate things centrally. On the other hand, there is national emergency legislation that widens his powers. I guess the relative power of state government can be an advantage too - when you have a corrupt buffoon in the White House, the state governor can take the lead. Lots of people are saying that NY state governor Cuomo is filling the void there and coming across as much more presidential than Trump.

Another issue in the States is the fragmentation of the healthcare ecosystem. Thousands of private businesses accountable to their shareholders vs one system run by the state. Whatever the wider arguments about the pros and cons of each, it's clear that when you need centralised command of a crisis situation, a unified health service is better placed to respond (unless it has been systematically stripped of funding in preparation for privatisation).

Not really if you have good leadership.

I get it that you hate Boris. This is another of your crusades we will have to endure for the course of this virus.

But, Boris for all his faults and he has many, is a far better leader than Trump and is doing a much better job. The U.K. is going to remain in lockdown for as long as it takes. Our idiot wants people back at work at Easter.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The scary thing is you wouldn't be surprised if he did make that happen. And even more scary is that half the population would jump at the chance and mock those that are nervy about it and tell anyone that listens that Trump was right.

Were it not for the individual State Govenours taking action, the US would be worse off than it is now.

The clown with an orange face still thinks this is going to go away on its own. He is telling people who know better that they don’t need ventilators in hospitals on “a hunch”.

The big problem here is his whole administration is afraid to stand up to him.

He should have invoked emergency powers and forced industry to start manufacturing the things needed to get through this. As I type NY State is on emergency supplies.

Problem is some don't have the luxury of choice. Same in the UK to be honest, many can't sit on their arris for three months.

Reality is that if this situation hasn't really changed come say the end of June big decisions will have to be made and going back to work will be a priority the world over.

Im not disagreeing or agreeing with you there but shouldn’t you explain why you think he was an excellent chancellor? Could easily say that he was prominent during a boom/bust economy that was never going to succeed.

No. America does not. The idiot in charge of the country does.

Just follow the money with him. Every decision he makes is all about how much he.can make for himself in the long run.

He has no interest in people’s well-being or what is good for the country what so ever.

Irony being that if he had acted fast and seen the long term picture he would have come out of this looking a very smart man. Imagine if the states had closed of borders immediately when this thing started we would now be going about normal business while the world around us crumbled and be in a very strong position.

That chimes with how I see things from over here, VC.

And the afraid to stand up to him thing is the broader problem with his presidency. He has got rid of senior figures who have stood up to the worst of his instincts and suggestions and there only seem to be yes-men left. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress are afraid to stand up to him for a different reason: the base loves him, and their careers depend on riding that popularity. Cross him and they get primaried and they're out of a job.

Indeed. Pretty much every pundit on the news channels is saying this. If he had listened to his advisors and took the necessary actions earlier it could have saved his presidency.

What he is doing now is going to hasten it’s demise.

Thats rough Robb.

Saw a heartbreaking thing on sky news yesterday about patients in palliative care dying alone as family and friends are not allowed visit due to the virus.

Struck a chord as both my parents were cared for that way in their last few weeks.
