The only way you will get a sensible debate on this issue is if you don't include Liverpool supporters.
The ones on this forum cannot bring themselves to even contemplate it happening regardless of how sensible and likely it might be.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We I'm a wolves fan and I think it would be a disgrace to just abandon a season three quarters of the way through. There isn't a single reason why it would need to happen. Yeah but next season gets ruined? Does it? Why can't we play all this seasons games and next seasons? Surely that is the best for everyone, we all get ALL the games played so financially clubs will be better off and fans will get more football.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're not wrong in any of that, but contracts are key. There'll be a mixture of players hell bent on leaving their current contract regardless on 30th June even without having a club to go to. As a free agent, they'll be in a great position to negotiate a new club when a new season resumes. Similarly clubs will have players they don't want to pay wages to after 30th June, as is their right. Once clubs have different rosters from when the league was postponed then the "integrity of the competition", something I keep hearing a lot about in the argument to resume whenever, will be completely lost.
It's done by the 30th June or it's done. I really don't see how it can't be.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Players can leave mid season then if they can't reach an agreement with their current club. Hardly a massive issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course it's an issue. As a free agent they can sign for whomever they please. So you could technically have a player who played for one club upon postponement, now signed on for another. That's against the integrity of the competition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That may be so, but it's an unprecedented situation so the usual rules will not apply. Voiding a three quarters complete season is hardly preserving the integrity either.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Once the contracts become an issue it's a whole new ball game. I agree voiding a season that's 75-80% done isn't great, but you said it yourself, it's an unprecedented situation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, might see players' contracts expiring mid season which hasn't happened before. But if that happens, so be it. It's hardly impossible.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's not the point I'm making. I'll repeat my example...
Say Aston villa have a player who is out of contract on 30th June, they want to keep him but he says no, I'm gone. He then signs for another club on 1st July and later scores the goal that relegates Villa on the last day of the season. There's no lawful reason to stop that player in that situation but it completely makes a mockery of whatever integrity the PL thinks it has then should not be allowed to happen.

With a vaccine at least a year or so away can anyone actually see people being allowed to attend games for at least a year?

Surprised people are downplaying players contracts as well. It is a massive issue, one that becomes greater as you go down the leagues.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It sure is. I've seen Liverpool fans say that teams could just extend them, completely ignoring that a contract is a two way agreement.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure a player who has already agreed a far better contract will happily just sit on his lesser wage.
A lot of clubs will be struggling to pay their players, but I'm sure those players will happily extend their contracts a few months and I'm sure the clubs will happily pay them...

The PL will do everything they can to finish the season before the next campaign because to not do so will cost them about £300m+ to Sky and BT.

Not really. There are no rules in place so they need to put some in place. Not sure what's crazy about that notion
Problem is the longer it goes on the more it’ll cost if it infringes on next season. Financially speaking, it’s less of a hit to cancel this season so that next can be carried out properly.
Firmino, genuine question
If the season was abandoned would you just accept it as horrific timing (like sides whose seasons were interrupted by WW1 and WW2) and move on and just hope the players smash it for you next season?

Say Aston villa have a player who is out of contract on 30th June, they want to keep him but he says no, I'm gone. He then signs for another club on 1st July and later scores the goal that relegates Villa on the last day of the season. There's no lawful reason to stop that player in that situation but it completely makes a mockery of whatever integrity the PL thinks it has then should not be allowed to happen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I doubt they would be allowed to sign for another PL team while the season is ongoing. If they do, they should be "cup tied" until the start of the following season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So we're just making up rules as we go along whilst simultaneously breaching employment laws? Got ya.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well considering there are no Premier League rules in place for this kind of situation then yeah, they pretty much are going to have to make up some rules, whatever the outcome.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're Firminos Brightest Tooth, I'd hate to see what decayed condition the others are in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What? If there are no rules in place then of course they are going to have to make some
Christ.

Firmino, genuine question
If the season was abandoned would you just accept it as horrific timing (like sides whose seasons were interrupted by WW1 and WW2) and move on and just hope the players smash it for you next season?

Well yeah, I'd have to

You can't just bring new rules into a competition half way through. Do you understand why or do you really need that explaining too?

When the season was first suspended it came out that there were no rules in place regarding what happens if a season cannot finish on time.

As a United fan I want to see the season finished to see if we can have a crack at top 4, FACup and Europa League. Still a lot to play for.
However, we must also accept this may not be possible and that we'll be playing Europa League football next season as well.
If that's the case so be it but it would be pretty disappointing after we looked to have found a bit of form. Having said that this is an unprecedented situation so the best thing to do is accept the resolution that's best for the health of everyone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or we could jump up and down screaming it’s not fair like Liverpool fans?

I'm not selfish though. We need to think of the greater good...

You're having a mare here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not selfish though. We need to think of the greater good...
