Dunkirk vs 1917

Well done fella👍
Nicely made. Good narration. Good points made.
I’m a Dunkirk man meself.
Only because, even though we’re cinematic experiences of the highest order, I found myself wondering ‘wow’ at the technical feats of camera work in 1917, but was a quivering wreck at the tension played out in Dunkirk. So because 1917 took me out of the story at times, that’s why Dunkirk gets the W.
But it’s a nitpick cos 1917 is really really good.

But yeah, keep at it my man. Good stuff.

Thank you - was open to different points of view.

I just felt in the end, 1917 was more character driven. Having said that, Dunkirk couldn’t have been character driven in its style of nonlinear story - it told it the way nobody else could’ve

Absolutely brilliant video You should stick at that, Worth putting on IGVT too.

I've only watched one Dunkirk, which was on a 70mm screening. Was enjoyable.

Good work fella.

Dunkirk for me

I thought both were a bit disappointing after all the hype.

Warhorse
Schindlers List
Saving Private Ryan
Inglorious Bsterds
They Shall Not Grow Old
Downfall

All very different types of war films but they all blow 1917 and Dunkirk out of the water.

Dunkirk was a borefest, sorry. Couldn't watch it past 20-30 minutes.

I was on the tip of my seat during 1917 and actually had a moment at the end. Very emotional and beautiful.

1917 for me all the way

1917 is definitely right in that list.

Dunkirk was good but really stupid. The pilot who ran out of fuel aged ago is still able to take down a fully fuelled German plane. Good film though. Haven’t seen 1917 but here it’s very very good..

Inglorious doesn’t. It was vastly overated. Typical Tarantino nonsense but better than his usual pap.. warhorse and saving private Ryan were excellent..

Its my favourite Tarantino film.

Waltz is magnificent throughout and the scene in the basement pub is off the scale but I realise some people need a more truthful ending.

Each to their own. Waltz was excellent though. Found the characters annoying and quite unlikable, atleast Tarantino dialled down his usual pointless filler conversations that last for ever that his films seems full of.

Hey Ole, I think seeing Dunkirk on IMAX was just an intense experience. Similar to Mad Max Fury Road in that sense. Not gonna go deep on story but rather hit you with an audio/visual display.
Now I know I’m doing 1917 a disservice, it’s just a bad habit picked up. but I seemed to talk more of the technical aspect of it. That’s on me, I know I was watching a good film, but when I came out of Dunkirk, ah man, what a great experience.

Personally, I wanted to credit Dunkirk more on that in the video but I felt it was right to judge regardless of what presentation both films were given.

Mad Max Fury Road was a very pleasant surprise much better than I expected it to be.

I'll take a look later, though I've only seen Dunkirk, which I enjoyed.

Howdy stringer, Yes I imagine Dunkirk would have looked great in the iMax, it’s cut out for those sweeping vistas the Dunkirk was full of. As I say I’ve yet to see 1917, but I know deakins was principle cinematographer and he’s amazing at it, to the point that some big name actors will decide on being in a film based on him being involved so I’m not surprised it was technically excellent.

Reading the above, I'm going to have to watch Dunkirk again. I watched it on a laptop and thought it was decent but not amazing, maybe the small screen did it a disservice.
I've not watched 1917 but im looking forward to the experience as ive heard great things.

Only seen Dunkirk but was left kind of underwhelmed. Thought it could have been more for a war movie. I mean it's a war movie and the biggest death scene is some kid on a boat who bangs his head.

I'm hoping I'll be more impressed with 1917 and from the trailer and the response to it, I think I will be.

It wasn't a war movie, not really. Which is why I liked it. Instead it was a director masterfully show to manipulate time, sound and imagery to create unremitting suspense.

Not everyone liked it. It lacks distinctive characters -forcing you to be invested only through the situation itself, and it is very artificial.

To me, is like a wonderfully crafted and extremely intricate clock. It doesn't really emotionally engage you, at least not until the last 10 minutes, but that's the point.

Oner-style aside, 1917 is a very conventional movie. It is mostly good, and very pretty to look at, but feel simple and limited compared to Dunkirk.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There was no tension at all in Dunkirk and I am not going to wait till 10 minutes before the end to finally be engaged.

1917 had tension from the start and the story had me on the edge of my seat the hole time. And without any spoilers, there were some moments that really moved me and had my by surprise.

No Tension? Dunkirk?! , well ok, look, I didn’t get the fuss over Blair Witch, still don’t. It looked to me the guy went to take a pee in the corner, and the film ended, and people were losing their heads on it. I was like, whatever..
Good/Bad film, whatever, but man there was deffo tension in Dunkirk, with Zimmers score, which just cranked it up.
Bought the score, Love it, but deffo not good for motorway driving.

But hey it didn’t work for you, cest la vie...
