Why are not footballers taking

Why should the players take a pay cut when their clubs can afford to pay staff their full wages and/or the chairman and board still take their cut?

We have seen football players from the PL, who do have money, step up and use their money to provide free meals to children who would otherwise have gone with none as the schools are closed. Opened up their homes and hotels. Things that our government should be doing rather than try and shift the blame onto football players.

Isn't it funny that they have nothing to say about billionaires in the UK who aren't doing the same? Why aren't they asking those to take money out of their own pockets and pay their staff rather than rely on tax payers?

I see this as a ploy by the failing government to shift the blame onto others. The Tories always blame or shift the blame onto others for their own failings or to cover up their own failings. Remember, many of these who were voted in voted against giving NHS staff a proper wage rise and cheered when they got their way. This very group underfunded and got people to turn against nurses and junior doctors when it suited them. People like Hancock have written about privatising the NHS and have been present or shown support from such think tanks.

This ploy is trying to shift all the ire of the people onto a different group. A group they see as undeserved of their riches as they're plebs and not from their ranks.

Naah, the league needs to retain money to save football. They are giving the lower leagues 125m and 20m to NHS. That's great news.

I imagine this money would have instead gone to clubs to pay wages.

Im sorry but players are oner rich for the most part, I’d dock their wages 50% and use that to pay non playing staff, all of them, and I bet most pl players wouldn’t even notice. These thick idiots probably have no idea how much money they have, I bet they don’t even manage it.

You do raises point about billionaires, there are many who could do a lot more to help. How about the royal family too? They are worth a bit.

But already rich players, not playing? I don’t have any sympathy for them.

It's not about sympathy. If the clubs are struggling, I'd understand about "docking" wages of the players so those that do depend on their wages (other staff at the clubs) can get paid.

I just see this as a ploy by the government to shift the ire of the public onto a group who aren't responsible for the muck we're in right now. PL footballers are an easy target. Why aren't we asking politicians to do the same? They're the ones who starved the NHS of cash and denied their workers a fair wage risen

There’s probably an element of that, but premier clubs will not be struggling, not with the money they get. Players do not need to be paid 200k a week for doing nothing during these times, that money could be put to use better elsewhere- as could the likes of Branson and other billionaires that operate behind the scenes.

Probably shouldn’t have overspent their means,

Good to see people like Maguire saying their 30% cut will be getting donated to hospitals rather than letting the club swallow it up.

They didn't overspend their means. This is happening because of Covid. Many businesses are in trouble and they are no exemption.

Why is it good to hear Maguire saying it. The good thing is that its happening, not to hear Maguire saying it.

Its known that 20m will be going to the NHS so it doesn't matter who comments about it. Maguire saying it is as good as me or anyone else saying it.

Oh wait. Maguire is a United player. Forget I said anything.

If it had been Henderson I would have applauded him too.

It won’t be though, he likes to steal valuable parking spots at hospitals for the disabled.

And it would still have been stupid.

What did he do with it after he stole it? Sell it off in the black market?
