You know it’s coming each day but still shocks me

posted on 4/4/20

Wouldn’t say it’s unbelievable

Just as expected and tomorrow will probably be 750, Monday 800, Tuesday 850 until we get to around 1000 a day. Then down to 950, 900, etc

It’s sad and horrific for those involved but posting death figures on here everyday isn’t really helpful for anyone, especially as it’s expected.

Terrifying. It really is.

Nightmare.

It’s horrible but why is it terrifying?

We believe we know what’s going to happen and for those affected it’s a horrible way to go with some well before their time. As long as we respect the guidelines it’s something that we will manage. What we’re doing now is just trying to keep it manageable.

50,000 deaths over the last 4 months (if everyone is to be believed). 150,000 people die a day around the world with 100,000 being age related for the eldest. That’s 18m deaths.

I know these are rough figures but nonetheless they represent a percentage of around a 0.3% increase but then again, how many of those would have died in the next month or two anyway?

The fear is the unknown. And a hysterical media fanning the flames of fear.

But it is a pandemic and we deal with pandemics. We always have done. We always will.

Edward, I think these numbers were to be expected, although still horrific. We are pretty well following Italy now, but may be slightly better prepared. It seems everything may though be peaking over the next week or so, so may see numbers stabilising and then going down.

The article linked in the op says "It brought the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 3,939, with 40 of those who had died in England - aged between 48 and 93 years old - having no known underlying health conditions."

Does that mean the other 3,899 had underlying health conditions? Trying not to come across as too callous - it's unbelievably awful whatever - but were they going to die soon anyway?

Also, I'm not sure how stats are done...for instance if someone gets run over and during the post-mortem it turns out they had coronavirus, are they classed as another Covid19 death?

According to UK scientists the daily increase (not the actual daily figure) is slowing. While it is tragic for the friends and families of all those who have died there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The peak is hopefully not far away and once it peaks the hope is that the daily death rate and new infections rate will start decreasing.

I agree with Gingernuts that we deal with pandemics, we always have done, we always will.

A vaccine was found fairly quickly for swine flu so there is hope of a vaccine for covid 19. There are thousands of very intelligent people working very hard on a vaccine at the moment.

Agreed. And just more fuel for the screaming hysterical press who scare the living daylights out of people. They are disgusting.

If someone said the death toll around the world would rise from 18,000,000 to 18,050,000 over a 4 month period would we all be so scared?

And that’s before adding in the fact that those “additional” 50,000 had underlying health issues and were predominantly among the elderly.

I should be shocked about how nonchalant you are about people dying.

But then I remember, you’re a Tory.

Only way to move forward and get back to normal without a vaccine is herd immunity, it’s a rubbish time.

Positive note, the infection rate went down, which is the most important number in returning back to a normal life

Grim times, and I`m almost reluctant to switch on the TV it is so depressing

We must salute the Government and the NHS for the wonderful work they are doing in fighting this awful situation

Would you still be such an 'hard man' when your folk or grandparents die a horrible death, suffocating from infection lungs? Easy dismissing death, safe from your armchair with a pint and pack of crisps, until it hits you personally.

Only yesterday you reported less numbers, happened in Italy, happened in SPain, only to go up by a mile again. You are not over the peak yet. After lock down in Italy it still took 3 weeks for it to peak.
