As i understand it, masks only stop direct contact with the illness and the vast majority catch this by touching surfaces rather than through the air.

Trouble is, the understanding of the disease is changing every day. It seems more and more "healthy" folk are falling seriously ill.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i think getting infected with a high viral load means your more likely to get severe symptoms

wearing a mask helps prevent that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Prevents it being spread from an infected user more than anything.

Unless somebody sneezes or coughs in your face, the masks are mostly ineffective.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not really

Having any sort of barrier is better than having no barrier

I feel some govt have only just understood the potential fallout

what i have learned through history is to never solely rely on the govt (or others) to tell you the truth. They might eventually but in a time that suits them. If it matters enough, do your own research and educate yourself so you can make the best decision for you not because the govt said so.

Not sure thats the case, i just think the media are highlighting 'healthy' people that fall seriously ill
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yes this is true

people younger than 60 who are healthy have a mortality rate of <0.5% i think
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wrong again

You really need to stop posting for a bit mate. Honestly

Why should there be inquests? It’s an act of god for goodness sake. Plagues/viruses have wiped out humankind for thousands of years. It’s ridiculous to expect people to have the right answer every time when we’re dealing with something that is unprecedented in modern times. Doesn’t help that the Chinese sat on it for 6 months.

Just accept that we will get whichever advice the experts think is the right advice at a given time. Medicine is often reactive and the advice changes all the time, thankfully.

I thought it was an act of God until I saw some Chinese articles and info circulated by the CCP itself.
The CCP advertised for a bat expert to work at their Wuhan facility. The leader of the facility, who they recruited, is now missing. She was one of the first to notice SARs/bat relationship. They have now removed her info from the company site. Lots of Chinese believe she was patient zero.
Now the CCP released a statement to say the rumours aren't true and she is alive....but no evidence to support it. When you use the CCPS own info it doesn't add up. The dates also don't make sense. The chinese evidence suggests their experiments/testing caused the initial infections.

Course there should be a public inquest here. Not necessarily looking to prosecute, but because it’s not happened before so they need to look at everything once all is said and done to improve the efficiency should it happen again.

You do understand sarcasm right? I even posted <cough> at the end. I really do not think it's the flu, in fact it's freaking me out because my wife and I both have a higher risk of not surviving if we catch it

And I'm pretty sure the advice to not bother with masks simply centred around it being a virus, and not bacterial.
Although both are microbial a virus is much, much smaller.
What scares me is the mask situation may create unintended placebo effect of making people think they are safe to go about business as usual.
There are lots of I'll informed people around and social media helps people pedddle lots of rubbish, quoted as if its fact.

Masks do NOT protect you. And this is known and accepted by WHO and East Asian countries. At least surgical masks. Viruses are tiny, and there are multiple caveats to wearing a mask that have been researched that still leads to a non-significant change in protecting yourself. Wearing mask —> constant touching of your face to adjust. Wearing for a few hours favours colonisation with a moist, warm surface. And, as someone else said, wearing it can give a false sense of security to therefore actually go into situations you’d otherwise avoid and get infected as it does NOT protect you.

They do protect from infecting others, however, and this is where it of course would be useful if worn en masse in a contagious viral pandemic such as this.

Accepted in East Asian countries?

That’s a fallacy.

It’s fake news to definitely state that face masks do nothing to protect you. And it’s very much fake news to say that it’s known in East Asia that they’re not acceptable.
