A lot of good bands still out there. If you only listen to chart music though, its pretty rubbish.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly, seems 95% of people here long for the days when radio told them who was the best out of blur and oasis.

We have amazing tools like spotify and shazam now that lead us to find the most amazing music, new and old, but you have to put a bit more effort in
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah I use Spotify all the time. Its so easy to find new music these days.

I think there has always been bad music and there has always been good music. You do have to look a bit harder for the good stuff now though! MTV 🖕

The 90s was the last great decade for music.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd push that to around 05-07 and music died for me then. There are a few good albums from certain sections, but not many artists make a decent second album nowadays. I think music is saturated and that goes for dance music as well which I am a big follower of. A bit like the Mighty Boosh, we might have to wait for the sound.

It’s also hard to be original. All the genres have been done. Think of the sounds of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and you’ll see that the sounds were fresh.

Rock n Roll
Funk / soft rock
Punk / electric synth
Techno/pop

More recently, RnB

But everything now sounds like it could’ve been released at any point over the last 20 years. It’s all samey samey - at least that’s my impression.

Maybe I’m getting old but by and large, I only listen to pre 2000 stuff.

Go listen to 22 , A Million by Bon Iver and tell me that isn't a fresh sound.

Bon Iver are great. One of the best bands I've seen live too.

posted on 8/4/20

Electronic music as well has definitely progressed over the past 20 years if you compare 90s to someone now like Bonobo

Yeah, each decade had it's own sound taking inspiration from the previous decade, right back to the 50s(haven't listened to music before then), however from 2000 to now, it all sounds samey, with the odd exception as it's manufactured to be that way, to make money.

Before you had to make a great album to make big money, whereas now, it's loads of advertising, creating an image, sеx appeal or find some kind of niche.

Yea, some mind blowing albums over the last decade.

Just Kendrick alone, you can see the musical range from good kid, to butterfly, to damn... it's mind blowing, top quality musicianship and thoughtful story telling.

If hiphop's not your cup of tea, that's fine... But the idea that music has stagnated is ridiculous.

Bit lazy to say from 2000 onwards tbh. Loads of great bands in the 00s, The National, Black Keys, The Strokes etc

There is probably more cr4p than there used to be, but there is also more quantity than there used to be - people have innovated how you can create music out of the studio.

It’s a bit cheap imo to say the quality of music is on a downwards spiral, the only two reasons people think that is because 1 nostalgia and 2 it is a bit more effort to wade through garbage to find good stuff. If you put together a decent playlist on Spotify then delve into the recommendations you can find great often new artists that you’ve never come across before.

Out of interest how old are you both? Did you listen to late 80s/early 90s hip hop too?

I did, a lot, and I really struggle to enjoy the newer stuff. Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang, Pharcyde and many many more - I just can’t deal with the new stuff and wonder if it’s an age thing as per the op.

It's only my opinion. I don't like any of your suggestions and they don't compare with the artists I do like. Naturally if you like modern music you're gonna have the opinion that modern music is good and if you don't, you're not going to have that opinion. It's not lazy or ridiculous to have either opinion as it comes down to personal taste.

I'm 42, so not an age thing for me.

I love hiphop from the last 80s, early 90s that had it's roots in soul samples and good music... I turned off hiphop when the production moved to more slick, synth based sound... But then came back with the likes of Kanye and Kendrick, who I think have a good musical background.

the biggest problem is not the music, the talent is out there. it's the music companies, they're unwilling to push anything that won't sell big. it's got to be marketable.
and it's not about albums, or even actually the music for them anymore, it's about tours, and merchandising, that's where the money is. and their best option to cash in on those is a couple of hit singles, directed at the largest single song buying sector, the prepubescent/adolescent kids. it's why their targeted with manufactured girl bands for the males, and boy bands for the girls/gays. s e x sells, no more so than among horny/lovestruck/idol worshipping teens. it's all about the image/look. not the music, not the voices, not the instruments (which hardly any of them can even play)

and out of those you'll get a few hit big, the take that's, spice girls, etc. all singing the same middle of the road, dull, tedious crap. and all sounding the same because everythings run through autotune so many times to try to get them all in tune.

then you get those who go mega, eg taylor swft, Kanye west (who's ego seems to have disappeared so far up his own backside, it's come back out on his shoulders).

these days, you've go to keep away from all the record/music companies and marketing to find anything even halfway decent that's not been homogenized by a panel of 'marketing' experts.

anyway, rant over....

nope, I implied that he's now just churning out tedious egotistical crap. it's now more about selling trainers rather than the music.

Correct, except for girl groups targeting males. They're targeted again at young girls.

there has and will always be great music

the problem is most of this great music will get buried by money making music so you have to be prepared to look for it. There are also people in the industry looking for this unique music recipe and have no hesitation to rebrand it has money making music

my theory is when you are younger you have more time to discover great music.

Today's chart music is totally crap and won't stand the test of time. Songs from the 60s, 70s 80, 90s are still remembered and played today. Today's pop won't be remembered in just 10 years time.
