Currently, I read that there is a thing happening in China where Muslim people are forced to have a Chinese person lodge with them and that person is allowed to sleep with the wife and basically act as a spy for the state. Is that real?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is real. The person ca a sleep in the same bed as the wife but not engage in relations. Though how that's controlled isn't known and if there were rapes happening due to this, it would be ignored. The Muslims are a distinct ethnic group who do not share the same language and culture as the Chinese (unlike the other Chinese - who's name is apparently blocked as a bad word - who are in the main Chinese Han and Muslims). The government there has forbidden then to speak, read or write in their own language. They're only allowed to use Mandarin and not allowed to practise their religion. These measures are more recent, though discrimination against them by the government has been there since the founding of the nation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No I've heard about this but its not as extreme as made out, they're definitely suppressed and oppressed though. The part about sleeping in the Muslim bed is totally made up. Chinese dudes I asked have heard nothing about it. They laughed. I'm surprised this story is spreading.

'Our Government was woefully under prepared for this through years of under cutting the NHS'

Not just that though. I've just read a piece in the Sunday Times saying that Johnson didn't even bother to attend the first FIVE Cobra meetings about this!

Two wrongs don't make a right? Specially if the leaders of the so called "civilised" countries are being laxed in their better judgement not to discriminate on any grounds.

If you were going to say you have the right to steal because Joe Blogg did it, it isn't going to cut it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So the Left is happy for others to practice discrimination provided it's not Boris or Donald?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What? Do you think the "left" doesn't condemn discrimination?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They only condemn when it's convenient. i.e to further their political objectives.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh the irony of this comment.

Chinese tend to believe their government. I've found it hard to discuss politics there with people. I've found many believing that the Virus started in the US or the US soldiers brought it and spread it when they attended the Miletary version of the Olympics last year. Whether it's made up or not, its what's Uyghurs reported that this is the case. The Chinese denied they were keeping them in camps until they were caught out.

Donald already has done as much....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Like being responsible for record employment among African Americans before the lockdown?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That was Obama, don’t let him taking credit for others work fool you. If you believe him you’re an idiot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Love the employment has been going up year on year since Obama yet people still think Trump waved a magic wand and made loads of new jobs for people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This.

If you asked him how Trump did it, he couldn't tell you - Nobody could.

We're responsible for the predictable consequences of our own actions. As British citizens, there's a decent amount we can do about the actions of our own government, but very little we can do about others'.

It makes no sense on any level - pragmatic or moral - to point to the crimes of someone else far away.

They are at it in China. It worries me. There are confirmed stories of very scary experiments. I'll try to find the link. These guys need to be watched or we are in trouble.

You have it exactly backwards (unsurprisingly). It’s much, much less convenient to address issues for which you can actually do something about than it is to say “but look over there!”.

You get to point at ‘them’ once you’ve dealt with your own house first.

The “cop out” is deflecting from our own responsibilities, actions and consequences. This isn’t debatable or negotiable. You wouldn’t herald the courage (pragmatic or moral) of a Russian commissar in the 60’s pointing to the crimes of some far away state, like Haiti or something, no matter how true his words. You’d ask why that person wasn’t dissenting against their own state’s crimes, first.

Normally this doesn’t need to be spelled out, but I appreciate the house contrarian needs to play his part at all times.

Meow. Who’s saying that you ignore problems in ones own country? There’s zero moral problems at all in pointing out the issues in other countries. And you know this. I hope.

Who here is saying that there aren’t problems at ‘home’ though?

No one is defending the UK. Most on here have the ability to both criticise the UK and China and there’s zero moral problems with doing so.
