Arsenal won't spend Ozil would have taken the transfer kitty by not taking a pay cut.

I think that we will definitely lose a few clubs before this is all over. Not so much the ones that rely on TV money. More the ones that rely on gate receipts. The business model is seriously under threat!

I cannot see how we will get a normal football experience before September 2021.

Same can be said for festivals and any industries that rely on mass gatherings.

Football won't be returning to BAU anytime soon.

The May futures oil price just went negative for the first time in history. The oil exporters are going bankrupt.

If anyone thinks PSG or City are going to be viable concerns in the future, they aren't paying attention.

It all depends on the TV deals. Will everyone that's cancelled their Sky and BT sign up again?

Short term the lower leagues could get plundered as they'll be desperate for cash to survive. Hopefully the PL sides with money look there first.

Hard to imagine business as usual for smaller clubs who rely on gate receipts.

Hopefully the government can provide loans to such clubs.

Better them than Branson.

If its true that no large crowds will be allowed until a vaccine is found then yeah, many clubs won't survive that. Lower league football cannot be played behind closed doors.

Been saying for years that football needs a salary cap to restore some sense of competitive balance.. You would have thought this situation revealing just how fragile football finances are would have brought about some sensible change but I highly doubt it.

As we have discussed to death, most clubs owners don't actually care about winning anything, its simply about retaining their top flight status so that they retain their share of the TV revs. Its a pretty sad reflection of sport where finishing 4th is seen as a success, allowing you to enter a comp where most of the teams that qualify have slim to no chance of winning but where the extra rev is all important.

Football is a business dressed up in the guise of a sport.... Sadly nothing will change

What we'll see is the richer clubs hovering over the clubs in trouble like vultures and will use their back-up wealth to take advantage of the financial troubles of other clubs to take their players for a pittance.

Football has no soul and is governed by self-interest. They won't work in the interest of the game, and each club will act in their own interest. We're kidding ourselves if we think anything else.

Once things are back to normal probably have season or so of clubs not really spending, but don’t think it’ll be long for until premier league clubs are pretty much back to spending and behaving as they did before this.

If there is no crowds for a long while that could dent a lot of clubs, even some prem teams. Not sure how lower league clubs could cope, that will be a huge part of their income. Guess players would have to take pay cut for the club to keep going, but it leaves so many legal challenges you can’t just cut someone’s pay when you like. Plus those players won’t be rolling in money, so they’re unlikely to want to agree to less pay

Most PL clubs will have no problem with spending considering gate receipts are nothing, relatively speaking. The TV money dwarfs gate receipts.

I think the first few weeks after restrictions are lifted and football is back on, I can see attendances going through the roof, as the public finally gets a dose of football, football chanting and cursing and booze

I can see a riot on the streets

I don't think anything will change, other than maybe transfer fees being reduced for a year or 2 due to smaller income pots.

If the small clubs go to the wall, the financially secure clubs will aim to attract their supporters.

Greedy agents are one of the biggest problems in football, they see their `clients` as nothing but a vehicle to make money, and will push / influence players into moves etc to fill their own pockets. Caps on agents fees absolutely need to be brought in.

It will be interesting to see what happens with regards to transfer fees in the short term, it will be Levy`s wet dream if their is a massive slowing down of the market.

Absolutely agree about the agents Billy. They need to be gotten rid of, or at the very least their businesses curtailed.

True, but still it's a significant amount.

Last season
Liverpool made 94.5m from maychday revenue
United 110.5m
Chelsea 73.5m
Spurs 71m
City 55m
West Ham 24.5m
Arsenal 98.5

Very few clubs in the Prem were profit making institutions, and that's before Covid. So we will be taking away millions from some clubs who are already in trouble. Maybe some sort of bailout from the prems reserves would still be necessary.

There's also loss of advertising revenue, commercial deals etc, and BT and Sky losing billions from cancelled sports subscriptions.

The larger (elite) clubs will obviously be better prepared to absorb loss of revenue streams but its not beyond the realms of possibilities that we see a significant level of mid to lower tier teams going under.

When football is up and running again I suspect games will be played behind closed doors for a period, and in turn there will be a gradual/phased approach to fans returning to stadia.

Tbf Sandy, as people have pointed out. The revenue is there in football to justify the spending. Any transfer caps/wage caps etc at least in the short term just help billionaire owners get richer.
