Also this testing thing that is being plugged all around the world is flawed to say the least. Nothing stops somebody being tested and picking up the virus an hour later but people seem to think testing means you are safe.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't believe they do to be honest.

The testing is to gauge the spread of the disease and to eventually isolate and control any further spread.

You should take the test if you feel you have any symptoms and act from there. It's not something you should be doing every day or so just to make sure.

In that it should be very successful.

People don't come in three categories they come in two.

Those that actually care about others and those that don't give a feck about others. It's about a 50/50 split.

Oh I do hope we don’t “lose” the email this time.

Testing appears to be such a huge issue, but I have heard so many conflicting views from scientists and health organisations around the world. Its a minefield to navigate tbh. Personally I would def want to be tested if I showed symptoms, but I wouldn't want to waste a test that could be used for someone more deserving.

Someone commented above that Germany maybe seeing the start of a second spike. Maybe the fact we are 2-3 weeks behind a country that has clearly handled the first phase better than the UK could prove very useful in terms of lifting restrictions. I am sure our scientists will be watching Germany very closely

The Germany thing will need more time to ascertain. There's no guarantee at this time that lifting lockdown was a mistake.

Even with the antibody testing, we just need one comparable European country to get a handle on it. And we would could hazard a reasonable stab at the spread of the virus in UK and also the fatality rates. If you want to get in to Czech Republic you must have a fresh negative covid test in the last three days. All countries should be doing this.

The Czech Republic has a population of 10.7 million according to Worldometer. I saw your population density analysis on another thread. Maybe this is why they can manage a follow up test. We are struggling to provide one test never mind two per person

In the case of the Czech travel policy(which is limited to critical business activity) the onus would be on me getting a test in my country(possibly private) before I was allowed in. Which for billion pound multinationals they will pay without blinking.

Ah right Admin. I understand what you were saying now. The two test is for people entering the country, not for their own residents. I cannot understand why every single person entering the UK isn't tested at Customs. Seems obvious that this should happen

I think the "flattening the curve" lockdown has as people have seen the deaths cause by the virus, embedded itself into the public consciousness as stay at home and don't catch covid. My suspicion is even with UK and Germany etc they will tolerate an increase in deaths and an R naught above 1 provided the system isn't overwhelmed. But we have become and for many quite rightly scared of catching this faking thing. With the exception of NZ, Iceland and countries who have effectively eradicated virus, i think that for most of us in UK it will be a when not if we catch it.

posted on 29/4/20

Well let’s see today’s figures before we celebrate the so called flattering of the curve, they are including care home deaths from today.

posted on 29/4/20

the only reason that the system isnt overwhelmed is that all non urgent operations have been cancelled, scanning is suspended and routine checks postponed. How and when will they make up the backlog if people are still in hospital with the virus?

I am in the camp of wanting the lockdown to stay as it is until the infection rate per day drops because I wouldn't want to risk a second wave. I hope they would extend it to the end of the month and I dont want our government thnking Spain/France relaxing their lockdown so they think it is safe and better reopen everything for the sake of economy.

The lockdown is slightly different in Spain because they can only go out for essentials and that does not include exercise.

I live in London and I dont trust people once the lock down is relaxed. Currently I have seen people having social gatherings or visiting a friend or 'bumping into each other coincidentally'. Also when I was at the park there were 8 people playing basketball together and loads of groups of 4 to 6 people which doesn't abide to the guidelines of social distancing. This happened during social distancing, imagine what people would do when the lockdown is relaxed.

No matter how long you have a lockdown, the fact that the virus will not just disappear means you will get a second wave until it is eradicated

They won’t, those people are dying in their droves too.

was thinking about framing of economic costs and dug out this old graph i had bookmarked. Gives you an idea of the 2008 bailout

Estimates for covid are between $10tn and $40tn

Wow. That is some really good analysis and breakdown of the data. One graph really stood out for me - the underlying medical conditions one. Heart disease and Diabetes combined contribute massively. No wonder the UK is struggling. Two of our biggest killers in normal times.

People use the word "trillions", and it almost has no meaning or sense of scale for most people.

To put into context the latest US stimulus package, if you were to stack up the total amount in one $ bills it would reach the moon. 🌜🌛💵💵💵💵

If you reduced the wealth of the 1%, by a one off tax of 23% the economic cost of covid would be covered
