The lockdown will be eased shortly I think. The main point of it is to ease the burden on the healthcare system. The NHS is currently coping fairly well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Its a fair point that.

I thought the timing from the government to now include community and care home deaths was interesting. Wait til the hospital deaths go down enough to now include all deaths, making sure it will never go above that manic 1000 number.

The care homes aren’t though.

But hey, it’s only old folk (and the people that care for them)

Yeah, it's the ability to do a huge amount of test per day that will keep you ahead of this virus...that's where most countries are failing, even us.

The NHS is coping OK, but the carehomes and home deaths are going up alarmingly. This Government has concentrated to much on hospital capacity, it has forgotten the rest of the country.

Regarding pubs I saw something saying they might have a three drink limit and then you have to go home. This was in the Daily Mail though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So who is going to police that. What happens if a town say has a dozen pubs, what`s to stop people going to all 12, and having 36 drinks?

Exactly, this is what can really turn the game. The supply of testing has to outweigh the demand by some distance.

Another factor is that these tests need to be instantaneous or close to that.

I think we should stay in lockdown for a while longer. China showed that a strong lockdown for a couple of months can all but eradicate the virus.

Obviously it's impossible to enforce as strict a lockdown here but it seems pretty obvious to me that if you start easing when there are still thousands of new cases a day then the second wave will hit pretty quickly.

Problem is with clowns like Trump around this virus will continue circling the globe. You really need global action, which is impossible in the current environment.

The frontline carers aren't really "coping". They are the main vectors of the vurus now.

The rest of us are on effective house arrest.

It doesn’t have to be one or the other

Full lockdown or no lockdown

It can be something in the middle. Certain places opening up but with restrictions, people with symptoms being told to stay home, only certain numbers of people allowed in one place at one time, masks mandatory in certain places, no visits to care homes etc

That way it gives a bit of a chink of light to people in lockdown now but also gets the economy moving along (which is believe it or not, very important) and gives us a way to get out of lockdown from A to C via B

Second lockdown coming in Germany as their infection rate has spiked after lifting restrictions.

posted on 29/4/20

This thing will likely be with us forever now and there’s absolutely no way a full lockdown can be achieved for the rest of the year when some form of vaccine will probably be available. It’s simply impossible.

So some risks will have to be taken getting out of lockdown. Hopefully once it’s (partially) lifted the PPE issue is sorted and people who fall ill won’t have the same issues that existed a month ago regarding lack of supply

Kids are a real problem. If there's any virus around you can bet on them to bring it home.
So be prepared....you'll get it too.
And its a very very nasty painful way to die ...and if you live, it has lingering after effects that are only just being discovered.

I would vote to stay locked down until there are 100% reliable tests - infection and anti-body tests - and you can trust the British Government to do contact tracing.
Very big IF there!
And do you think only old people die?
Not true. You are misinformed!

If we don’t start easing the restrictions in some way next month then we risk not having a country to go back to. A ruined economy will cost many more lives in the long run, plunging people into a poverty cycle which will take decades to break.

It’s absolutely no good saving 50000 lives from Covid for example when you plunge 10 million people into absolute poverty and ruin resulting in lives lost in a different way

People who just sit there and say we should carry on as is for another month at least just haven’t got a clue. We have to get the country back on its feet next month in a safe and gradual way before returning to a new normal

'Even us'!

Yeah...we've dealt with it better than anyone else but even we can't get the testing right.

At some point it will have to happen. The testing would go a long way to allowing these reopenings.

Your economy is crap anyway.
Okay ... get your crap economy back on its feet ....and see if you live to enjoy it!
If you catch this crap you will die an unbelievably painful death.

We should stay like this until end of June at least. Gives us a chance to really get on top of this virus and more testing can be done. Be interesting if we do stay like this till end of June how close we would come to eliminating it.

Funny how the use of the term 'lockdown' has changed and the government have manipulated its use during the past weeks.

In the early days of the restrictions they didn't use the word. In fact politicians would look askance at anyone using the term and even deny that we were in lockdown.

Now we have people who believe that we are in complete lockdown.

We've never been close to lockdown.

In reality, we have limited restrictions of movement and completely unfettered access through our borders.

Airlines are struggling because people aren't flying and because other countries have closed borders. We still have up to 10,000 people a day arriving at Heathrow.

Not even close to a lockdown.

I'm not saying we should have a lockdown btw. Just commenting on how easily we get brainwashed every day

I have two kids of school age. There's no way I want them anywhere near a school anytime soon. It's far harder to manage social distancing at school (even if they do it in shifts) than most work situations. The density of people in a confined space is one thing. Another is the fact that you're relying on children to understand the rules, accept the rules, and constantly remember to follow them for several hours. It's pretty much guaranteed that some won't follow the rules at all and many will try but occasionally lapse.

Looking at the (incomplete, ever evolving) evidence of other countries that have got some sort of control over the disease, until there's a vaccine (if there ever is one), the only way is mass testing so we can identify and isolate outbreaks. This is what the WHO was recommending by early February, and what enabled some Asian countries that were paying attention to avoid devastating infection levels and prolonged shut-downs. Our government is now, on the cusp of May, approaching a basic minimum well below that of offering tests to people who are highly likely to be exposed to the virus. Only when that is extended to regular testing of a much wider subset of the population can we contemplate a safe easing of restrictions.

Just to get you started, here's a sample of Iranian athletes who are gone, courtesy of Covid-19, and you may notice that not only are they young, some of them are female!

The reality is that we are at very early stages still. Trying to work out the implications of this virus, for example in terms of long lasting damage, re-infection, pre-dispositions.

Our Government, rightly or wrongly, was buying time, but at some point needs to implement a test, trace, isolate policy to control this properly. It costs money but will cost less than the damaged economy.

First priority must be lives and I'm ok with a longer lockdown if government are really driven by the medical science not the behavioural science AND they ensure there is a real safety net for more people as many will have fallen through gaps.

However you feel about the government, I don't envy them having to deal with this and love them or hate them they need support not constant criticism which really impacts their ability to deliver.

100% agree.
Lie detector testing would be just as helpful as covid testing.
