The damage to the economy is almost irrelevant now. We are double the dip of the recession already. As others are saying, governments and banks will literally be printing money to off set this.

Lonewolf

How do you know we're printing it?

Also, if its monetized then why do taxpayers still need to pay it back? Will they unprint the money as it's paid back?

‘ Although the gilts market showed severe stress in the middle of March as the coronavirus crisis deepened, the government has so far had little difficulty raising finance, especially as the BoE had already committed to printing £200bn to pump into the government bond market to ensure there was sufficient demand for gilts and improve market functioning.’

“Usage of A&E departments are down by up to 50% in some parts of the country as people are afraid to attend the hospitals and therefore aren’t getting treatment. Cancer diagnosis is down by 3/4, patients already with cancer and other deadly illnesses are not receiving lifesaving treatment.”

This is the stupidest argument for easing the lockdown restrictions I’ve heard.

Is it going to be easier or more difficult to treat patients at A&E if we flood the hospitals and Nightingale facilities with tens of thousands more critical COVID-19 cases?

Is it going to be easier or more difficult to get people in front of their GPs and cancer specialists if we have to divert all of our healthcare professionals to the front line to deal with an even more serious second spike?

Use your facking brains people, please.

We have doctors out of retirement currently trying to keep people alive. We have medical and nursing students practising as fully qualified professionals.

That’s the largest part of the reason why the non-COVID-19 fatality rate is up.

Unless people are suggesting letting the R0 fly up back past 1 and just having the NHS refuse to treat COVID-19 patients, confining them to their homes, and letting them die there?

Astonishing how we had nearly a decade of Austerity, because we were continually brainwashed into being told the country did not have any money, and the finances had to be looked after.

In the space of two months the Government are now throwing money around like confetti, just so they look good in the electorate`s eyes.

Austerity should never have happened, and the Government have now been found out. The money was there all the time.

Coming out of lockdown, when we haven’t even been testing peopleidiots
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Where on earth do you get the “haven’t even been testing people” from?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know GPs and nurses who have been ill and had to isolate and they didn't get a test. So they have no idea whether they have had covid. Our nursing homes are being ravaged and folk are getting sent to homes without tests.

Can we meet in the middle to say it's "slightly less than perfect"
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s far from perfect but yes.

My point being a claim that we’re not testing anyone is just simply incorrect.

I don't know what you lot are on about.

You clearly are not paying attention.

the biggest headline today is boris Johnson had had a baby boy. HUGE NEWS (yes he had it more than his his partner apparently)

stop looking over there are the covid thing. focus on what the government want you to.

lets stop talking about lack of tests, ppe, conditions for doctors etc. you need to get back in the herd with the rest of us. The queen will address us for VE day next and we can wave some flags as well.

Christ almighty.

Your grasp of government finances is completely non existent.

As is you understanding about managing a financial situation as opposed to having to react to try and decrease the affects of an unknown virus that kills in the thousands and for which there is as of yet no cure.

Just where do you think all this money has been kept? Under the mattress?

not quite mate but you are hitting the right tone.

The money was not there and isn't here now but if you print it and wipe out people's savings and pensions with inflation you can make a smuch as you like.

2008 was about debt. this is a short term hammering that in theory can be shut off (in practice the jobs won't all magically come back) so shovelling a few billion about is not quite the same.

Austerity was not the right path on its own but reckless spending it not the right path either.

Stimulating the economy in the right way at the right should always pay dividends. wasting money never works.

Like I stated yesterday our government is borrowing huge amounts to pay the social welfare bill for nearly 1.13 million people due to the virus (Most of these folk I acknowledge it is not their fault).

This is going to literally bankrupt us and the repercussions will be felt for a long time.

Paying it back should be fun and I expect a significant tax hike in the budget later this year for those of us that are still working

Absolutely this

And the danger being that there are fewer people and possibly lower paid who will be still working to foot that bill. All this while the cost to the state increases as we will then have to look after and support those additional people who are not working or are earning less.

It's a vicious cycle and clearly demonstrates that a lockdown can only ever be part of a plan. The longer it goes on in its current form the more damage will be caused elsewhere to the point where it will be irreparable.

And then where do we borrow money from?

OK, in your barely nonsensical statement I am presuming that in English it means that:
'if your st' sic. (if you're stood or if you're at?) least 2m away from someone you cant contract if or transmit it.

Well, you can can transmit it to a person standing more than 2 meters away from you.

Not hard to understand really.

Yep, I can see that now whereas a week ago I would have thought otherwise and that's down to the recent news from Germany which will spook Boris and his chums.

The date we are looking at here is 11th May. So far.

I reckon it will be at least 2 more weeks of the current measures and then a phased withdrawal.

You're wasted on here.

Yep; I'm thinking 2-3 weeks but some reinforcement next week that construction should still be carrying on as it was always allowed to do, particularly for outside jobs.
