What's going right/wrong at Celtic youth.

It's a fair point but I suspect the glamour of a top European name would be appealing for any kid.

It's not just us however, youth players all over the world are scouted and move on. Not meaning to do a direct comparison but Lionel Messi was scouted from Newell's to go to Barca as a kid.

Is that not comparable to go from Celtic to Bayern?

morning mate, hope you are well?

positive that we have good young players coming through, but as no point in having this great youth development system if we can't get them near the first team before they are off.

depends on a young mans ambition I suppose, some will want to go play at a huge club, some will want money.

ideally we need two things - one with level headed parents to keep them grounded and convince them their best place to develop is in Glasgow, and secondly we need them to be celtic daft.

It’s due to an agent who Lawwell p1ssed off and now he’s causing havoc in our youth teams, we’re expected to lose another 2 highlight thought of prospects.

This after losing Morrison who appears to be doing well for Bayern U17s.

i'd just point to feruz as an example of how it could go wrong.

then again, others will point to Gilmour.

we want them emulate Tierney.

Dembele and Johnston were the two big ones, we’ve kept them and now on long term deals so that’s the main thing for now.

Josh Adam.

Barry Hepburn to Bayern too.

The appeal of playing in one of the top leagues, at an extremely wealthy (and successful) club is obviously too much of a draw.

Most young playes will have the belief that they can make it in any team. The lure of making it at Bayern or City (and atm the chance to potentially work under Guardiola) is too great.. especially if they can make £100k per week as a team player at one of those clubs as opposed to £30k per week as one of our top performers.

Same has been happening with us as well. We lost Gilmour, sadly, and almost lost Leon King as well. Whilst McPake (although he did start at Hibs) and Kennedy have reportedly had interest from clubs down south/on the continent.

I suppose the positive is that it shows that something is working well in the academies.

The negative is it'd be far better to watch someone like Gilmour in midfield than Aribo.

I also like the fact that we loan out a player who is nowhere near our first team. The team he goes to then loans out a lesser player to him and the team taking the lesser player think he is amazing...

Gilmour looks the real deal even at that age.

Chelsea fans want him starting ahead of Jorginho already

If Gilmour was still at Ibrox the fans would put unbelievable amount of pressure on him to be the next {insert name}.

It's a rhetorical question but would he have been given the time to play at Ibrox or would he have been behind the usual players?

I had heard about him but never watched him until he made his Chelsea debut and he was simply phenomenal

I seen him a few times for the 17 & 19s at Rangers and he never really stood out then.

His progression since going down south is incredible.

I think gilmour was pretty close to first team action when he left, but not many youth players leave Scotland and go onto playing for Man City. I know youth players leave Dundee United a lot, Scott Allen being a prime example he left united and spent years in on loan and youth set up. Finally ending up at Hibs now chances are he could have developed into a better player playing a 100 or so top flight games before moving on and maybe (no disrespect) finishing at a higher level than Hibs.

Good point call sign, our manager was a world class midfielder, surely you would have thought he would have given the boy a chance.

The few times I saw Gilmour he was head and shoulders above the others in technic
No real surprise he left.

Similar with King who looks like he could play right now.
He strolls it at the moment and needs to step up or he will stagnate.
Amazed he stayed.

John Fleck is the example though of getting it wrong.
Absolute stand out at 16 but hyped beyond reasonable expectation and while he did ok when he came through it was still difficult for him.

Move on a few years and he is a millionaire playing in the EPL and touted with a big move.

Kids will develop at different speeds.

there needs to be a greater finical penalty or playing penalty to stop youth being poached. The arbitration council often undervalues the players and the compensation that has to be paid is minimal. They need to introduce a rule that stops players playing for the receiving club's senior team for a e.g 2 seasons if they haven't played at least one full season for the producing teams senior team. That would force the youth to stay at least 1 season and give back to the club that trained them. It would also mean they would have to sign some sort of pro contract so the producing club could get a better price for them.

So, you're in favour of child exploitation?

Some sort of mandatory sell-on clause at a decent level might be a good idea, say 10% or 20% of the transfer fee. At least then the original club might get a reasonable fee.

These things exist already. There are people lobbying the children’s commissioner to get them abolished as being exploitation in contravention of UN rules.

The centre half / full back at rangers just now .. Patterson ??( I think ) ..is going to be a top player
Seen him about 4 times and he's fcking solid
