Why would you add the pound?
Your equation is:
£49 + £49 = Shirt worth £97 + £1
Is the answer “some beans”?
The 1 pound you keep for yourself wasn't part of the initial transaction. So if you take that out, and just give them each 1.50, then there is no extra pound. It's basically due to taking an equal cut of change to which you never contributed to begin with
Simple answer is to save up enough money and not rely on others. THIS IS WHATS WRONG WITH TODAYS BORROWING/LENDING SOCIETY!!

Wrong answer.
You borrowed £100, paid back £2 and now owe £98
The £1 you have is part of the money you owe to your parents, rather than some sort of profit, as is the £97 spent on the shirt.
