Comparing Chelsea 04-06 with 9/10

Defence 04-06 >>>>>>> Defence 09/10

Big difference. That 09/10 defence had some bad off days (Everton 3-3 and Man City 2-4 immediately come to mind) and Cech especially was yet to return to his best. 09/10 was also far more complacent and kept dropping points at key times to keep United in the title race. 04-06 would have killed that title race by November/December. Plus 09/10 team went ~ a month barely winning a game in December I think. 04-06 team never went on as bad a run in those two years.

04-06 team were better. In 09-10, as the user above rightly points out, Chelsea dropped daft points to allow United to stay in the race. 04-06 would never have done that. Chelsea won 2010 EPL by 1 point, 04-06 would've won it by 10 points.

09/10 were definitely easier on the eye. Defensively that 04-06 team is probably the best this league has seen....until Virgil

Ever achieved with us I assume you mean?

The treble with Inter is obviously his career high

The squad was insane in 04/06

Roman gave over enough money for 2 top players in every position - or at least that was the general idea

How did this come to be a debate?

The 04 squad were streets ahead, no debate in my mind.

It's also a fallacy that they weren't entertaining, when they had Robben, Duff and JC!

That 09/10 was awesome and never given the full credit they deserved for smashing the PL goal record. We absolutely mullered a few teams by 7 or 8 goals that season.

Having said that the 04-06 team was better and how that team didn't win the CL at least once is baffling as they fully deserved to.

Even if they were nowhere near as easy on the eye as Carlo's 09/10 team.

I didnt say world class. Top was meant to mean top end of PL class at a minimum

Dont know why you dislike Geremi. He was a good utility player imo

Yeah Del Horno wasnt great. Gallas might not have had such an issue if he wasnt covering left back so much

04-06 team wins all day. I can see a debate being viable, those points in the article were all arguable, but the 04-06 team has too much quality & historical impact to overlook.

I will say a very large factor on this is the managers. Put a young Mourinho in charge of that 09-10 team & we could've easily been the ones winning a treble instead of Inter that year. Was at the peak of his power as a manager/leader in 09-10.

To clarify I said Carvalho/Terry are misremembered not overrated. I also said I think Ancelottis starting XI was superior to Mourinhos

If you were to combine the sides you would go:

Cech 05
Ivan Terry 05 Carvalho 05 Cole
Lampard 10 Makelele Ballack
Robben Drogba 10 Malouda

09/10 6 - 5 04/05

The key thing for me is that the 2004/2005 team broke the stranglehold that Arsenal and United had on the PL. Am I also right in thinking that Ronaldo had left United when we won the title in 2009/2010?.

Foe me the best team we ever had was between 2004 and 2006

posted on 16/5/20

Yeah, I just checked and United had sold Ronaldo. Unites and Arsenal were nowhere near as strong in 2009 as they were in 2004. Watching Chelsea between 2004 and 2006I honestly never thought we would lose a game. I have never had that feeling with a Chelsea team since.
