Furlough update - anyone else enjoying it?

I’ve been working the whole time. From home mind. Just as busy as ever.

I have been working full time since the start as I can work from home no problem. To be honest though a couple of months off on €350 a week (that is the payment over here for those who are out of work due to the virus) does sound like it would have been nice.
Especially with the good weather. Mrs Irish is a social care worker so has been off in full pay since the schools closed. She is based in the school for the blind

Half of our workforce are on furlough, we were all given the choice and I can understand a lot of people’s reasons for choosing it, esp the lads who are travelling 30/40 miles a day, the saving on fuel alone would justify it, I literally live about 1/4 mile from work so I’m still working.

Certainly shouldn’t be taboo to admit to enjoying it and making the best of a bad situation.

I’m in the same boat re the excercise, missing the gyms but fitter than ever as a result of lots of running and excercise in the garden.

I’ve also found it refreshing mentally to have a prolonged time away from work. Not enough emphasis
is put in life on the importance of your mental health and I feel it may do wonders for a lot of us long term.

Unless you have a sabbatical or whatever it’s unlikely you’ll get such a prolonged break in your working career to have that mental refresh so enjoy it I say.

A lot of people will also come out with good money in their pocket too.

I'd rather work than be on benifits tbh.

Personal choice.

So would most, but furlough wasn’t a choice for me.

This is about whether people are enjoying it or not, rather than if they’d rather be on benefits or working. Should’ve made that clearer in the article I guess..

Been a nightmare for me but I’ve committed to paying all my staff 100% throughout, and I suspect a few of them are loving it.

Fair comment, though I know a couple of people that are quite happy if it stays like this until Christmas and when the pubs open again they'll be banging on about the unemployed being lazy basstards again.

Not fair to equate this with living a life on benefits.

I think the fact it’s a temporary measure is part of the satisfaction.

This

Hence my point about enjoying a couple of months of it

Enjoy because the tax increases to pay for it will be horrific

I hate furlough now, I hate being cooped up inside for 8 weeks, it’s mentally draining. I can’t believe I miss my job. My heart dropped on Tuesday when the scheme was extended till October too, but thankfully my company still have me down as being furloughed till the end of June.

I'm working, whilst other colleagues are on furlough. I think I'd be bored out of my brain after the initial first couple of weeks, if I was furloughed.
Glad you're enjoying it though The weather has been a huge bonus!

Never! The Irish work very hard.

May be drunk while at work, but they work hard!

Same for me Mike, I wanted to continue working but was told there would be simply be nothing for me to do so had to accept furlough to protect my employer.

As a result, I feel no guilt at all about the situation. Why should I?

My biggest issue is I have two people working while the others are on furlough.

I felt paying 100% was the right thing to do but now there’s resentment from those left working.

They seem to have forgotten how well they’ve been treated compared with many and just become irritated at the comparison with their co workers.

That’s a vicious rumour about working hard

As pay back us heroes should be allowed to have a furlougher as a slave for the same amount of time as we've been paying their benefits. I do not have the time to clean my toilet due to work. You do. Now get on with it.

I would have been furloughed at the University I work at if it wasn't for being offered the chance to work at one of the Mega Labs the University has helped set up for COVID testing. On paper I'm on an internal secondment.

Being in a newly built diagnostic lab (rather than research) is different and has had its challenges but I'm enjoying the experience so far.
